Position Description
The Closure Specialist will assist the Closure Manager in the safe implementation of the closure strategy in alignment with Barrick’s sustainability philosophy. This position will assist with all aspects of the operation leading to the delivery of the organization's overall goals, as well as assist with external stakeholder engagement. This will include, but not be limited to, water management operations, equipment maintenance, technical services, planning, budgeting, cost control, project management, reclamation and closure activities.
Responsibilities
- Assist the site to develop procedures and implement programs to enhance the safety culture and maintain a safe work environment on the Journey to Zero Harm.
- Ensure site activities are conducted per all federal and state HS&E regulations. Interface with state and federal regulatory agencies as required. · Support the site with tailings dam related projects, dam inspections, testing, sampling, and entering data. Furthermore, in collaboration with the Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer (RTFE) and Engineer of record, function as the deputy RTFE and help to ensure the facility is following GISTM guidelines and in conformance with Barrick’s Tailings Management Standard.
- Manage projects, contractors and consultant management, including scope, schedule, cost controls, and implement the closure strategy for the site.
- Assist with the development of and successful execution of the site Opex & Capex budget.
- Develop technical scopes of work for Professional Engineering services as well as physical construction contracts.
- Assist with maintenance activities, planning, and scheduling to achieve targets, optimize the frequency and scope of planned maintenance events, and improve the overall reliability of the facilities.
- Prepare regulatory reports accurately and timely.
- Review and organize historical documentation to support current and ongoing projects and closure strategy.
- Identify risks and potential mitigation strategies, as well as raise appropriate awareness within the organization for additional input to ensure optimal resolution/mitigation
- Ensure appropriate policies, controls, and systems are in place and applied to adequately manage operational and environmental risk
- Have the ability to work outside and regularly walk over uneven, sloped, rocky, wet or icy ground. Must have the ability to lift 50 or more pounds safely. · Available for on-call emergency call outs 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study (Environmental Science, Geology, Engineering, or related field of study) with a professional engineering licensure preferred.
- A minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience in mine closure and project execution. Experience in mining, natural resources projects, construction are acceptable.
- Previous project management experience for capital projects in excess of $5M preferred
- Excellent people skills directed towards developing and empowering teams and individuals
- Ability to prepare and present reports to all levels of the organization in an accurate and fit-for-purpose format
- Proven success in implementing and managing change processes
- Demonstrated ability to design, implement and control internal and external projects
- Business acumen and understanding of mining business drivers, strategic and tactical planning, budgeting and cost control processes
- Some travel and extended hours may be required
- Strong organizational, time management, problem-solving and office management skills
- Previous experience working in mines with comparable size and technical scope to those of McLaughlin is preferred
