Job Summary:
Under close supervision this position assures the safety and treatment of patients and functions at the entry level of the Behavioral Health Assistant job class series. This position is primarily responsible for facilitating patient participation in program activities; documenting interactions with patients including events or situations that occur while working for the MHU, providing patient orientation on admission, leading community meetings; implementing planned recreational activities and transporting patients as needed. This position also assists in the care and monitoring of patients and clients receiving services from MHU and RRC (including sleep off). It is expected that this position interacts therapeutically with clients/patients at all times.
Minimum Qualifications for the Job:
BHA I:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Must obtain 10 hours of education related to Mental Health and /or addictions within four (4) months of hire and annually
- Experience: One year of experience working directly with the public providing a service or one year of experience working with patients or clients who have been diagnosed with addiction or mental illness. Preference will be given to applicants with experience working with persons who experience mental health, addiction or behavioral health challenges.
- Substitution: A minimum of 12 college credits in Psychology, Sociology, Mental Health or Chemical Dependency can be substituted for the required year of experience.
- Licenses/Certifications: Current Alaska driver’s license; current Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider CPR or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification must be obtained within ninety (90) days of hire; TEAM & Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT) training must be obtained within ninety (90) days of hire.
BHA II:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Must obtain 10 (ten) hours of education related to Mental Health and/or addictions annually.
- Experience(s): Minimum of one year of experience as a BHA I at Bartlett Regional Hospital. Must have the skills, knowledge, and competency to advance to BHA II from BHA I as assessed by competency checklist and performance assessment which is performed by supervisor.
- License(s)/Certification(s): Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider CPR or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification. Current certification by Bartlett’s approved Behavioral Health Physical Intervention and Verbal De-escalation training program. Valid driver’s license required if assigned to perform patient transport duties. CNA or Behavioral Health Tech Certification preferred.
Internal Hires: Pay rate will be determined based on applicable personnel rule or union contract terms.
