What are the responsibilities and job description for the LIBRARY MEDIA TECHNICIAN position at Bassett Unified School District?
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under direction of the Principal, operate a school library independently and provide technical library media services related to the circulation, distribution and recovery of library books and other materials; process and shelve library materials and assist students and faculty in the selection of library/media materials. This position is subject to the provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Assist students and teachers in locating and selecting materials and in researching information for special reports and classroom assignments; provide instruction to students in proper use of instructional resources.
Check books and materials in and out at the circulation desk; calculate fines and send overdue notices; contact parents and students regarding late and lost library materials.
Order, receive and process library and media materials; ensure orders are complete and in good condition; catalog books, periodicals, pamphlets and audio-visual materials using the Dewey Decimal System; prepare library cards including cross-references and shelf lists.
Plan and schedule library services and activities; work with teachers to ensure students have adequate time for research and special projects; assist teachers in ordering instructional materials; maintain catalogs and lists of new materials available.
Maintain student discipline in the library.
Train and provide work direction to students involved in shelving books and media materials and in circulation duties.
Maintain records related to circulation, purchase orders and lost, damaged and overdue library materials; prepare periodic reports as requested; maintain library files, catalogs and vendor files.
Prepare displays, exhibits and bulletin boards.
Distribute and maintain inventory of school assigned audio-visual equipment as required; perform routine maintenance on audio-visual equipment; receive and distribute County film orders.
Plan, organize and conduct Book Fairs and related fund-raising events.
Examine and discard or mend damaged books and materials according to established procedures.
Operate a variety of equipment including typewriter, copier, audio-visual equipment and computer equipment as required by the assignment; ensure library equipment is in proper operating condition.
OTHER DUTIES:
Coordinate special testing of students; coordinate with teachers regarding make-up tests for students.
Participate in receiving, processing and distributing textbooks as assigned.
Attend meetings, in-services and workshops as assigned.
Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to:
Graduation from high school
College-level course work in library science or closely related field
Two years of increasingly responsible library clerical experience including some experience in cataloging, materials processing and reference work.
Completion of two years of higher education study OR possession of an Associate's or higher level degree, OR pass assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics OR reading, writing, and mathematics readiness.
NOTE: Incumbents hired prior to January 8, 2002 will have until January 8, 2006 to comply with the college or assessment requirements.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT: School library environment.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES: See to read books and media materials; lift, carry and/or library materials weighing up to 25 pounds; push and pull book carts; walk and stand for extended periods of time; bend, stoop and reach overhead to shelve books; manipulate hands and fingers to operate a computer terminal, office machines and standard library and audio-visual equipment; and hear and speak to exchange information in person and on the telephone.
