Title: Outdoor Education and Programs Postbac Intern

Position Purpose

Bates College is seeking an Outdoor Education & First-Year Programs Post-Bac Intern to join a team of professional staff working to support all of our Outdoor Education & First-Year Programs on campus. This specifically includes assisting the Coordinator of Outdoor Education and Programs with planning and tasks related to the Annual Entering Student Orientation Program and other orientation initiatives related to the first-year experience. The Outdoor Education & First-Year Program Post-Bac Intern will also provide support for planning and tasks related to the Bates Outing Club.

The Outdoor Education & First-Year Programs Post-Bac Intern should be an enthusiastic, adaptive, and self-motivated individual with experience in outdoor recreation and program planning. The Outdoor Education & First-Year Programs Post-Bac Intern will assist with developing training programs, managing budgets, trip planning, gear management, risk management, and logistics. The Post-Bac Intern will support the AESOP team by providing timely assistance with responding to email and phone inquiries, supporting the implementation of Leadership Week & AESOP trips, managing the AESOP website, and supporting other areas of outdoor education and programs. The Intern might also be involved in various projects related to the first-year experience and new student orientation. The position is paid via stipend and includes an on-campus apartment and a five meal per week plan for the duration of the contract.

Job Duties

Annual Entering Students Orientation Programs

  • Incorporate the tenants of equity, inclusion, access, and educational justice in all areas of work.
  • Support First-Years and their families with effective communication and resources.
  • Supports the AESOP Coordinators by assisting in designing and planning Leadership Week and AESOP Trips.
  • Supports the Coordinator of Outdoor Education & Programs (COEP) in developing and facilitating workshops and training blocks that provide consistent information and resources to all student leaders.
  • Coordinates with the COEP to design a summer communication strategy for first-year students and their families, assists in the implementation of this strategy.
  • Collaborates with campus partners on AESOP program design.
  • Assists COEP and AESOP Coordinators with gear management.
  • Assists with updating the AESOP website on Wordpress.
  • Additional AESOP projects as assigned.

Bates Outing Club

  • Incorporate the tenants of equity, inclusion, access, and educational justice in all areas of work.

Assists departmental colleagues to develop programming opportunities aligned with the BOC's Mission

Statement. * Supports the COEP & Outdoor Program Managers (OPM) team in various projects and initiatives in preparation for the academic year. * Assess E-Room gear in preparation for the academic year. * Organization of the Bates Outing Club Google Drive. * Handle communications with students and staff over the summer related to upcoming BOC events. * Assist in planning large scale BOC events such as Clambake and Peaks Week. * Collaborate with OPMs to ensure a smooth beginning of year transition.

First-Year Experience

  • Provide assistance as needed with other First-Year Experience and new student orientation projects.

Live-in/on Responsibilities

  • Live in a designated on-campus residence.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree required.

Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year experience in outdoor programs and education including at Bates and/or other outdoor

programs, undergraduate experience in outdoor education, recreation, trip leading, student or outdoor leadership positions, etc.) * Commitment to supporting students from underrepresented groups, including students from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, first-generation-to-college students, LGBTQ identified individuals, and low-income students. * Commitment to supporting young adults and their families in the transition to a residential college environment through the context of AESOP.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Commitment to equity and inclusion, and serving the needs of a culturally and educationally diverse community.
  • Excellent judgment and awareness for interpersonal dynamics.
  • Ability to view all programs with an equity and risk management lens.
  • Knowledge of general or specialized outdoor activities such as; backpacking, hiking, biking, canoeing, skiing, etc.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships with clientele such as

students, families, staff, faculty, external vendors, and co-workers. * Excellent communication (written, verbal & listening) skills. * Ability to effectively engage with diverse personalities and manage difficult situations. * Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities with minimal supervision. * Strong organizational, tracking, and assessment skills including proficiency in basic data management systems and basic computer software (e.g., Microsoft Word and Excel, Power Point, WordPress [website], Google docs, email and calendaring.) * Strong problem solving skills with the ability to adapt and explore multiple avenues to a solution. * Personal commitment to excellence and the mission of a top-tier small liberal arts college.
