What is BAYAC?

BAYAC AmeriCorp s collaborates with schools and community-based organizations to serve youth and families in the San Francisco Bay Area. As part of AmeriCorps, BAYAC Members commit to a full-time (40 hours/week) term of service in the Bay Area's most high-need communities, working to provide youth with opportunities for meaningful engagement, skill building, and emotional and social development. This is a paid work experience program for folks who are looking to advance their career working with youth and in the field of education. We are hiring folks to serve as after-school educators, classroom aides, academic coaches & mentors, tutors, health educators, case managers, and enrichment activities coordinators.

In the East Bay we are partnering with organizations and schools such as Alameda County Office of Education, The Mosaic Project, Think College Now Elementary School, Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, Community Education Partnerships, Summit Public Schools: Summit K2, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland School Based Health Centers and City of Berkeley: Berkeley High School and Berkeley Technology Academy Health Centers.

Position duties may include:

  • Support students/youth in developing the skills they need to be successful in school and life
  • Provide homework and academic support for program participants at school sites
  • Provide case management, referrals, and independent living skills for clients at community based sites
  • Plan and facilitate youth focused lesson plans and activities
  • Promote a safe and positive learning environment
  • Actively supervise and ensure student/youth safety at all times
  • Model positive attitudes, behaviors, and language
  • Communicate regularly with the site coordinator and regional supervisor
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and reporting procedures
  • Attend and participate in weekly training and cohort meetings

  • Promote meaningful community partnerships
  • Become part of a large alumni network

Timeline: Service cohorts begin August 2024 and serve until July 2025 for 1700-hour members.

  • U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or a lawful permanent resident of the United States

*Currently, we are unable to accept applicants with student visas (such as F1 or F2 student visas, J1 or J2 exchange visitor visas, G series visas, etc.) or those with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status.

  • At least 17 years old
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Ability to work full-time (40 hours/week) and commit to an 11-month term of service
  • Successful completion of TB test and Live Scan/fingerprinting (upon hire)
  • Prefer to have 48 college credits completed
  • Prefer bilingual in Spanish/English, not required
  • $30,000 Member stipend (pre-tax) for the service term spread throughout 11 months and distributed every two weeks
  • $10,000 combined Segal Education Award and California For All Education Award (upon completion of the 11-month term of service)
  • Free healthcare benefits (includes medical, dental, and mental health)
  • Forbearance on existing qualifying student loans and payment of interest accrued during service.
  • Childcare assistance from AmeriCorps paid to an eligible provider of your choice (for those eligible)
  • Receive food assistance via CalFresh (for those eligible)
  • Participate in 120-340 hours of professional development & training
  • Network and career development for life after AmeriCorps
  • Earn a Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) responder certificate
  • Complete a 30-hr Youth Behavioral Health training series
