The Excavation Operator is responsible for operating an excavator equipped with scoops, shovels, or buckets to excavate and load loose materials
Essential Functions
- Operates the excavator and other heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
- Perform daily maintenance and safety checks on equipment
- Move levers, depress foot pedals, and turn dials to operate power machinery, such as power shovels, stripping shovels, scraper loaders, or backhoes
- Become familiar with digging plans, machine capabilities and limitations, and with efficient and safe digging procedures
- Observe hand signals, grade stakes, or other markings when operating machines so that work can be performed to specifications
- Operate machinery to perform activities such as backfilling excavations, vibrating or breaking rock or concrete
- Ensure compliance of all safety procedures and policies while promoting company’s safety culture
- Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned
- High School Diploma or GED required
- At least 3 years’ experience operating excavator and heavy equipment
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of highways, roads, sewers, and bridges
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Exercise discretion and independent judgement when handling day to day information
- Excellent time-management skills to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks and responsibilities to meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities
- Ability to work cooperatively across all levels delivering on commitments – results oriented
- Ability to complete work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to work under pressure to meet department targets and deadlines
- Ability to work non-routine hours, when necessary
- Ability and willingness to travel as required
- Ability to work outdoors, exposed to heat and humidity, cold and rain, and around heavy traffic areas
- Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
- Ability to operate job related tools
- Constantly perform repeating motions that may include feet, leg, wrists, hands and/or fingers
