Job Summary
The Polisher Technician is responsible for performing polishing, buffing, and finishing operations on stainless steel, aluminum, or other materials to achieve desired surface finishes and meet customer specifications. This role requires knowledge of polishing techniques, and equipment, as well as attention to detail to ensure that all parts meet quality standards and customer requirements. The Polisher Technician will work closely with other team members in the shop to prepare parts for final inspection or assembly.
Key Responsibilities
- Surface Preparation:
- Prepare parts for polishing by cleaning, deburring, and removing any rough edges or imperfections before the polishing process.
- Select appropriate polishing compounds, abrasives, and equipment based on the material type and desired finish.
- Polishing and Buffing:
- Operate manual polishing equipment (e.g., grinders, polishing wheels, buffers) to achieve specified surface finishes on metal and other materials.
- Perform tasks such as polishing, buffing, and sanding to remove scratches, blemishes, or oxidation, and to achieve mirror-like or satin finishes, as required by the project.
- Use hand tools or power tools to apply polishing compounds, abrasives, and waxes to workpieces.
- Consistency and Quality:
- Ensure all workpieces are polished to consistent and uniform finishes, free from defects or visible imperfections.
- Achieve specified finishes as per customer or engineering specifications, such as high-gloss or matte surfaces.
Blueprint Interpretation
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical specifications to understand the job requirements.
- Verify part dimensions and tolerances against customer prints to ensure accuracy.
Quality Control
- Conduct first-article inspections and in-process quality checks to ensure parts meet strict tolerances using precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, protractors, and gauges.
- Identify defects or irregularities and make proper adjustments or corrections as needed to ensure quality standards are maintained.
- Collaborate with the quality control department for final inspections and to resolve any dimensions, tolerances, or quality issues.
Safety and Efficiency
- Follow all safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, steel-toed safety shoes, and hearing protection while on the shop floor.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment to prevent accidents and ensure efficient operations.
- Optimize polishing processes to improve production efficiency while maintaining quality standards.
Documentation and Reporting
- Log into all jobs via Global Shop when working on work orders to maintain accurate tracking of labor and materials used.
- Maintain accurate records of production, including completed work orders, quality documents, and quantities produced.
- Report any equipment malfunctions, material shortages, or production delays to the supervisor promptly.
Continuous Improvement
- Actively participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities, including workshops, seminars, and certification programs to enhance job-related skills and knowledge, as required.
- Suggest improvements to the manufacturing process or machine operations to increase productivity and quality.
- Perform all other duties as assigned or required to support the team's goals and maintain efficient operations.
Qualifications
· Education and Experience:
o High school diploma or equivalent required.
o 3 years of experience operating in a polishing, buffing, or finishing role in a fabrication or manufacturing environment is preferred, but not required.
o Knowledge of food grade polishing is a plus.
· Physical Requirements:
o Frequently lift and carry materials weighing 25-50 pounds and perform tasks like standing, walking, bending, and crouching for 8-10 hours per day.
o Possess strong hand-eye coordination, quick reflexes, and good depth perception for operating machinery, forklifts, and overhead cranes safely.
o Work comfortably in loud, vibration-prone environments with varying temperatures.
