It’s an exciting time to be part of BBC News as we grow in North America. Our independent, impartial and unrivalled global journalism has made us one of the most trusted news brands in the US, where we reach tens of millions of people each week across digital, TV and radio. We are offering a six-month paid Social Media Fellowship for recent graduates, starting in May based in our Washington DC newsroom. The fellow will work on managing and creating content targeting US audiences on some of our key social platforms, including WhatsApp, YouTube, and TikTok. We are seeking someone with strong news instincts, digital expertise, and audience engagement skills - bursting with ideas on how to amplify our journalism in a constantly changing digital environment.
Key duties include:
- Writing engaging text and crafting visual posts for BBC News social audiences, particularly younger demographics
- Producing compelling vertical video and visual content using editing software like Final Cut Pro and other industry-standard tools.
- Collaborating with the US editorial team and social team to pitch and brainstorm creative stories and treatments and adapt existing stories for different platforms
Key criteria for the role:
- Strong writing skills with the ability to craft engaging, platform-specific content.
- Proficiency in video editing software (FCP, Premiere Pro, or similar) and experience creating social-first visual.
- A creative, adaptable mindset with a team-player approach
- Flexibility in work schedule, including availability for late hours and weekends as needed
This is a local hire position and eligible candidates must be able to live and work in the US (US citizenship, Green Card or work authorisation).
Compensation: $1,000 per week for six months. Compensation does not include benefits and taxes will be withheld.
