OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF JOB
The primary function of this position is to assist the Charge Nurse in the provision of nursing care and related services for all residents under their assigned area and in compliance with all federal, state and local guidelines, standards and regulations which govern the facility, and, as directed by the Charge Nurse so as to ensure each residents medical, psychosocial and spiritual needs and wishes are met effectively and efficiently on a continuum.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB
GENERAL
1. Assists residents in all activities of daily living including, but not limited to: bathing,
dressing, grooming, nutritional needs, transferring, ambulation, continence and oral
hygiene according to their interdisciplinary plan of care.
2. Assists in performing restorative nursing functions such as bowel and bladder training,
range of motion, turning and positioning, transfers, ambulation, vision, hearing, and
communication.
3. Responds to all resident call bells regardless of assignment.
4. Carries out all basic care procedures such as, but not limited to, catheter care, temperatures, pulses, heights, weights, specimen collection, intakes
5. Uses proper infection control techniques, including universal precautions, to prevent the spread of diseases.
6. Observes residents and reports changes of physical, psychosocial, spiritual and emotional conditions to the Charge Nurse.
7. Maintains a safe work environment and exhibits safe work practices.
8. Adheres to, upholds and enforces all facility policies and procedures.
9. Completes documentation regarding care and services rendered and the residents response or lack of response to the care/services rendered as directed by the Charge Nurse.
10. Performs various cleaning duties, using appropriate sanitizing chemicals/solutions as indicated and as directed by the Charge Nurse.
ADMINISTRATIVE
11. Attends all department meetings, educational programs, etc., as scheduled or
directed.
12. Actively participates in various quality improvement initiatives.
13. Reports any supply/equipment needs, repairs, etc., to the Charge Nurse and/or
Supervisor.
14. Uses shift report to assess and organize their workday.
15. Adheres to, upholds and enforces all regulations and recommendations of the Department of Health, the Health Care Financing Administration, the Department of Public Welfare, etc.
16. Participates on various committees and with in-service training as directed.
MISCELLANEOUS/OTHER: (EXHIBITED 100%)
17. Assumes all other duties as assigned.
18. Maintains a professional, customer-oriented demeanor at all times.
19. Works within a team concept and is thus cooperative with co-workers and peers.
20. Maintains confidentiality of information.
21. Represents the facility in a positive manner.
SUPERVISION GIVEN
Receives instruction and supervision from the Charge Nurse.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
- High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
EDUCATION/TRAINING
Certification as a Geriatric Nursing Assistant, or, meets the state and federal requirements under grandfathering regulations, or, attends an approved nurse aide training program to obtain eligibility for the Nurse Aide Competency Examination within 120 days of employment.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Minimum of one (1) year experience in a in a hospital, long-term care or health care setting preferred but not required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES RQUIRED
- Must be able to speak and understand the English language in an understandable manner in order to carry out essential functions of job.
- Must possess ability to function independently, have flexibility and the ability to work effectively with residents, co-workers and others.
- Must possess effective communication and interpersonal skills, particularly in dealing with elderly and ill populations, health care providers and community services.
- Must possess ability to maintain confidentiality in regard to resident information and records.
- Must possess general knowledge of care and procedures used to assist residents in daily care and comfort, utilizing all safety procedures.
- Must possess knowledge of and the ability to use proper body mechanics to meet physical job demands.
- Must possess ability to interact effectively with residents and their families and assist in providing emotion and social support.
- Must possess knowledge of and the ability to properly record, chart and document necessary information as required by established policies/procedures.
- Must possess knowledge of federal, state, county and nursing home policies and procedures as they relate to activity personnel and care of residents.
- Must possess knowledge of infection control and universal precautions and the ability to apply same to essential job duties.
- Must possess excellent organizational skills and the ability to accomplish several duties and meet schedule of various departments regarding resident care.
