POSITION SUMMARY
The HIM Coordinator assists in the day management of operations within the Health Information Management (HIM) department. The HIM Coordinator, in conjunction with the HIM Director, shall be accountable for ensuring that standards established by Bear Valley Community Healthcare District (BVCHD) relating to staff productivity and accuracy are consistently met. The HIM Coordinator will promote and facilitate efficiency and effectiveness of HIM related systems, including documentation. While ensuring the timely completion of all duties, the HIM Coordinator will oversee the Release of Information work functions and assist with internal and external follow-up.
Additional responsibilities include assisting in the implementation and updating of policies and procedures as well as working with the coding staff on the daily billing reports. The HIM Coordinator will be involved in day-to-day operations and will participate in and sometimes lead projects that extend across disciplines outside of HIM with multi-level stakeholders.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Exhibit professionalism in the Department as it relates to patients, families, visitors, physicians, and staff members
- Under guidance of HIM Director the HIM Coordinator oversees prepping, scanning, quality control, and patient deficiency analysis of all documents received by the BVCHD Medical Records Department to maintain the integrity of the complex electronic patient medical record.
- Works with HIM Director and Business Office on billing report and monitoring coding of charts and physician documentation and deficiencies.
- Processes documentation into the Electronic Health Record (EHR) and is responsible for demonstrating knowledge of HIPAA privacy and security regulations as evidenced by appropriate handling of Protected Health Information (PHI), promoting confidentiality and using discretion when handling patient and various hospital departments’ information.
- Responsible for assisting the HIM Director in overseeing Release of Information
- Assist the HIM Director with the development of training materials for the HIM Department and any reporting requirements.
- Serves as a resource for staff and others who require knowledge of HIM best practice.

Accountability for compliance with laws, regulations, and policies to demonstrate
ethical behavior - Abides by the standards of American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Code of Ethic, BVCHD Code of Conduct and reports to the HIM Director any violations identified or concerns.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education (or substitute experience) REQUIRED:
- BLS Certification within 3 months of hire
- Registered in approved Health Information Management program or Coding program
Education Preferred:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
Minimum Experience REQUIRED:
- One (1) year relevant experience in Health Information Management
Experience Preferred:
- Two (2) years relevant experience in Health Information Management
Skills:
- Excellent verbal and written communication and listening skills
- Strong organization skills with attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Computer literacy in Microsoft Office
- Must have the ability to work collaboratively with providers and other members of the healthcare team
- Must be able to withstand stressful situations
- Knowledge of healthcare administrative processes such as reimbursement policies, compliance, and procedures, operations, coding, and billing regulations.
