What are the responsibilities and job description for the Correctional Officer Trainee position at Beaufort County South Carolina?
The position of Correctional Officer Trainee is responsible for learning and performing duties related to maintaining security, safety, and order within the Beaufort County Detention Center. Under direct supervision, trainees will undergo structured training to develop the necessary skills for supervising incarcerated individuals, enforcing facility rules, and responding to emergencies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Attends classes in personnel procedures, regulations, current laws, the criminal justice system, human behavior and a variety of other topics related to corrections work.
- Learns about various operational units to gain familiarity with the functions of the Detention Center.
- Participates in practical training including firearm usage, defensive tactics, arrest procedures, use of corrections equipment and a variety of other procedures and activities related to corrections work.
- Takes tests to measure knowledge gained, evaluates performance and determines progress made.
- Participates in physical fitness and strength training.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.
- Requires a short demonstration up to and including one month of related experience.
- High school diploma or GED
- College degree, military experience or law enforcement experience preferred
- Must be at least 18 years of age, a U.S. Citizen, able to pass a physical examination, have a satisfactory credit history.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license with no DUI convictions within the past five years.
- Must submit a CERTIFIED driving record of the past five years
- No prior criminal domestic violence convictions, felonies, or any crime of moral turpitude
- Required to work any hours, days or shift, including holidays and weekends
- Bilingual preferred.
- Must pass an extensive background check to include criminal history and credit history
• Employment will remain contingent upon successfully completing training at the SC Criminal Justice Academy and passing a physical examination prior to attending the academy
EXPERIENCED OFFICERS:
• SC Criminal Justice Academy certified Class 2 LCO/SCO (local corrections/state corrections)All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County Council will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for the illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment. Employment is contingent upon clearing both the drug screening and background investigation.
