ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Nursing Skills Lab Coordinator will coordinate and facilitate the utilization of the nursing skills laboratories, maintain nursing skills laboratory facilities and related laboratory equipment, assist other nursing faculty with skills laboratory experiences, and teach to ensure that goals and objectives specified for each clinical section are satisfactorily accomplished in accordance with established regulatory agency and/or accreditation requirements across the School of Nursing. Also, including ongoing participation in the implementation and evaluation of the nursing program. They will be participative in selection of students, advising students, curriculum development, program revisions, program evaluations, textbook selection, teaching in the classroom and clinical/lab setting, evaluation of student achievement and other matters as assigned in support of the mission of the School of Nursing and College.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

A. Teaching

1. Responsible for teaching nursing laboratory sections of courses each quarter as assigned by the Dean of Nursing and/or the College. The minimum assigned course schedule/load is 20 hours and the maximum is 30 hours.

2. Responsible for covering lab classes when necessary for other faculty members (e.g., illness).

3. Responsible for delivering instruction in a student-receptive manner, facilitating the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and experiences each student needs to successfully achieve course learning outcomes in the course as outlined in the syllabus.

4. Communicate with students regularly and timely.

5. Utilize feedback from course evaluations to identify professional development needs and to enhance teaching effectiveness.

6. Develop and implement student evaluation methods and tools for each course that measure the progression of the student's cognitive, affective, and psychomotor achievement of course and clinical outcomes based on published rubrics and sound rationale.

7. Plan, implement, evaluate, and update the program of nursing.

8. Provide lab learning experiences.

9. Evaluate student achievement of curricular outcomes related to nursing knowledge and practice.

10. Develop and implement student evaluation methods and tools for each course that measure the progression of the student's cognitive, affective, and psychomotor achievement of course and clinical outcomes based on published rubrics and sound rationale.

11. Participate in academic and professional level activities that maintain the faculty member's competency and expertise in teaching responsibility.Communicate clinical outcomes to the student, clinical instructor, preceptor, and staff at the clinical site.

12. Assume responsibility for utilizing the criteria in the selection of clinical sites and in the evaluation of clinical experiences on a regular basis.

13. Evaluate the student's experience, achievement, and progress in relation to course and clinical outcomes, with input from the clinical instructor and preceptor, if applicable.

14. Meet classes (face-to-face and/or online) regularly and promptly at scheduled time.

15. Monitor and report at-risk students for timely and supportive interventions to facilitate student success.

16. Design and implement teaching strategies that will assist a nursing student to meet the course objectives or outcomes.

17. Evaluate each nursing student’s achievement and progress with input from the preceptor, if utilized.

18. Functions as faculty for assigned lab/courses. Works with lead/didactic faculty.

19. Responsible to review student evaluation summaries of assigned courses and utilize the feedback for planning and implementing future courses.

20. Responsible for providing the evaluation of students in lab courses/lab assignments.

21. Maintain expertise in nursing and teaching pedagogy by attending seminars, workshops and/or participation in activities supporting professional enhancement.

22. Participate in academic and professional level activities that maintain the faculty member's competency and expertise in teaching responsibility.

23. Provide lead faculty with grades in order to maintain course/student records in accordance with FERPA regulations and submit grades and records by established deadlines.

24. Recommend equipment, software packages and equipment for purchase consideration that may enhance learning and contribute favorably to program outcomes.

25. Maintain ongoing communication with clinical coordinator/s and/or laboratory sections to ensure correlation and integration of client care learning experiences with those of within the classroom.

B. Laboratory Coordination

1. Ensure compliance with the Nurse Practice Act, the Kentucky Board of Nursing rules and regulations, programmatic and institutional accrediting standards, and all other state or federal regulations and as related to nursing skills laboratories.

2. Collaborate with nursing course faculty to schedule and coordinate nursing skills laboratories for courses.

3. Prepare, maintain, and distribute quarterly a master calendar of nursing skills laboratories and encompass nursing laboratories across the School of Nursing.

4. Maintain an inventory of lab supplies and equipment and ensure faculty and staff are informed of available resources.

5. Perform annual inventory of all laboratory equipment and supplies to ensure sufficient to meet both current and anticipated future needs.

6. Perform and/or arrange for necessary maintenance and repair of training equipment to ensure proper function.

7. Make recommendations regarding equipment and software purchases and equipment maintenance contracts for the nursing laboratories.

8. Collaborates with dean and program directors when ordering supplies to ensure cost effective purchases.

9. Evaluate the effectiveness of nursing laboratory experiences to implement change based on feedback from students and other nursing faculty.

10. Organize use of nursing lab space, equipment and supplies with considerations from other nursing faculty.

11. Maintain security of nursing lab supplies and equipment.

12. Participate in preparing assessment and evaluation tools for measuring student nursing skill performance.

13. Conduct demonstrations of skills in collaboration with nursing course faculty.

14. Participate in the appraisal of nursing skill(s) demonstration by students in collaboration with nursing course faculty.

15. Coordinate and participate in the remediation of nursing skills with nursing course faculty.

16. Provide training to faculty, students, and support staff in using laboratory equipment.

17. Facilitate training of faculty, students, and support staff in the use of and evaluation of nursing skills laboratory to improve competencies and skills in meeting course objectives.

18. Assist other nursing faculty in preparation of nursing skills lab for learning experiences.

19. Develop and maintain orientation plan for nursing faculty concerning nursing skills laboratory.

20. Participate in regulatory and accreditation reviews and preparation of reports, as requested.

21. Prepare necessary reports regarding nursing skills laboratory (e.g., hours, students served, inventory/equipment, and any applicable learning media) and participate in Nursing Program Advisory Committee (PAC).

C. Committee/Meeting Responsibilities

1. Serve as a member of Nurse Faculty Meeting.

2. May serve as a member of Nursing Assessment and Curriculum Committee.

3. Participate in Nursing Program Advisory Committee (PAC).

4. Serve as a member of Student Representation Committee.

5. Serve as a member of Nursing Admission Committee.

6. Serve as a member of ad hoc committees, as may be assigned.

7. Participate in college-wide committees, when requested.

D. Advising

1. Post and maintain regular weekly office hours.

2. Assist students with course scheduling and provide guidance in their academic and personal development.

3. Develop remediation plans with students.

4. Participate in academic advisement and guidance of students, such as related to admission, progression, and fulfillment of program requirements.

5. Schedule regular meetings with students who are at risk of being unsuccessful in a course or the nursing program.

6. Assist students in identifying and utilizing resources that may contribute to their success.

7. Participate in interviewing and make recommendations for hiring of faculty.

8. Make recommendations regarding equipment and software purchases.

9. Participate in determining academic policies and practices for the program of nursing.

10. Participate in the development, implementation, evaluation, and updating of policies for student admission, progression, and graduation in keeping with the policies of the governing institution.

E. Curricula

1. Submit suggestions for changes in master syllabi to Dean of Nursing & Associate Dean of Nursing.

2. Assist in the design, implementation, evaluation, and updating of the curriculum using a written plan.

F. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

SKILLS/ABILITIES and leadership skills; organizational research skills; strong interpersonal and communication skills; strong clinical and professional skills. Licensed and insured to drive a vehicle.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION: A minimum of two (2) years full time or equivalent experience as a registered nurse within the immediate past five (5) years and shall have and maintain expertise in the clinical or functional area of responsibility. The nurse faculty shall document preparation in educational activities in teaching and learning principles for adult education, including curriculum development and implementation. The preparation shall be acquired through planned faculty in-service learning activities, continuing education offerings, or academic courses. Nursing faculty hired without prior teaching experience shall have a mentor assigned and an educational development plan implemented. A master’s degree in nursing specializing in nursing education is preferred; however, a master’s degree or higher degree with a major in nursing is required (official transcripts required). Will consider a minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from an accredited college or university (official transcripts required). Faculty employed to teach in the undergraduate/diploma programs without a graduate degree in nursing (e.g., MSN) will be expected to engage in active and continuous progress toward accomplishing a graduate degree in nursing, preferably with a specialization as a Nurse Educator. The faculty member should begin graduate nursing studies within six-months (6) months of appointment and graduate nursing degree conferral accomplished no later than three (3) years from the date of appointment. A current, active, unencumbered, license, privilege, or temporary work permit (or compact state licensure) to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Current health care provider CPR card. Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
