JOB SUMMARY
The Bedford County Planning Department is seeking an energetic, focused, and self-motivated individual to develop and maintain the geographic information system (GIS), analyze geographic data, perform GIS computerized mapping functions, and provide technical services and support.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Illustrative Only)
1. Update and maintain the data components of the GIS applying knowledge of spatial feature representation.
2. Design, develop and convert spatial databases, GIS coverages, GIS applications, cartographic products, standard procedures and documentation for data.
3. Review existing and incoming data for currency, accuracy, usefulness, quality and documentation.
4. Meet with users to develop system or project requirements.
5. Oversee entry of data into database, including application, keyboard entry, manual digitizing, scanning and automatic conversion.
6. Coordinate the use of GIS data and software with other local, state and federal agencies.
7. Maximize public access to GIS data, including via the County's website.
8. Oversee the maintenance of the Bedford County Tax Parcel Fabric.
9. Develop tax parcel reports for the use of maintenance and corrections to be applied to the Tax Parcel Fabric.
10. Develop customized maps for use by County departments and the public.
11. Develop and create web mapping applications for public and County use.
12. Provide information and technical assistance and support to the public, County departments, and other agencies.
13. Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
· Bachelor's degree with a major in GIS/geospatial science or equivalent years of experience in a related field.
· Working knowledge of ESRI GIS, and Microsoft Office products.
· Evidence of progressive initiative and problem-solving skills via internships, previous work history, etc.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands and fingers; feel, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
