CAFETERIA WASTE SORT STATION MONITOR
SCHEDULE: Weekdays during the school year, approximately 2 hrs/day
Monday, Tues, Thurs, Friday: approx: 11:00 am-1:00 pm, Wednesdays approx: 10:00-12:15
Davis Elementary, John Glenn Middle School
Description:
To supervise the cafeteria waste sorting station and assist students in properly disposing of their lunch waste, which is more environmentally friendly, and also teaches students to be good stewards of our environment. A friendly and patient team player who is willing to proactively guide students through the process will be best suited to this role.
When students are finished eating, they come to the sort station to share unopened food they haven’t eaten, empty their milk/water/juice, trash napkins and utensils, recycle anything possible, scrap their food waste and stack their lunch tray. An average of 600 students use the cafeteria spaced over three or four lunch periods.
Responsibilities:
Arrange the row of bins daily, wipe down share cart with sanitizer wipes if needed
Proactively explain what goes in which bin, expedite children through the line
Answer “where does this go?” questions & help guide students through lunch tray return
General light cleanup duties (ie: wiping spills from the floor)
When needed, use a grabber to pull items from recycling to prevent contamination (ie: a plastic fork accidentally gets tossed in the recycling bin)
Transporting excess unwanted unopened foods to the school’s “share fridge” Weekly assess overflow amounts
Perform related work as required, potentially floating to other cafeterias when needed
Must possess the ability to:
Follow school-specific lunch routines and procedures, maintain positive relations with students and staff without distracting, be flexible and adaptable while students learn the waste sorting process, be comfortable with repetition
Physical and environmental demands:
Sometimes crowded and noisy environment, standing for approx. two hours, light lifting (10 pounds or less), Ppush and pull rolling cart, bend/twist and reach, hand mobility: use a grabber handle
