Description:
To assist the principal with leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills in a manner that promotes the educational development of each student.
Responsibilities:
Performance Responsibilities:
Instructional Leadership
a) Assist in facilitating the mission and vision of the school.
b) Encourage and use a variety of strategies to assess student performance accurately.
c) Apply current principles, practices, and research to foster effective teaching.
d) Assist in leading the renewal of curriculum and instructional programs.
e) Promote and model the effective use of appropriate instructional technologies.
f) Hold teachers accountable for having high standards and positive expectations that all students can perform at high levels.
g) Work with teachers and other staff to supervise and evaluate their performance, using performance standards, and to identify areas for growth.
h) Assist in supporting ongoing professional development of the faculty and staff.
Organizational Leadership
a) Apply research and organizational leadership skills.
b) Demonstrate communication skills that are clear, direct, and responsive.
c) Create a positive, informed climate for collegial teaching and learning.
d) Assist in facilitating constructive change initiatives.
e) Plan for, model, and encourage collaboration and shared decision-making.
f) Apply strategic planning techniques that foster systemic approaches and result in sound decisions.
Administration and Management
a) Assist the principal in carrying out personnel selection, supervision, evaluation, and management functions for the school.
b) Apply current knowledge of policy formation and legal requirements within the scope of his/her responsibility.
c) Apply current knowledge of fiscal management policy and practices within the scope of his/her responsibility.
d) Apply current knowledge of auxiliary programs (such as transportation, food services, pupil personnel services, maintenance, and facilities management) within the scope of his/her responsibility.
e) Use appropriate technologies to administer his/her responsibilities.
Promotion of Equity and Appreciation of Diversity
a) Assist in ensuring equity among programs and learning opportunities for staff, students, and parents.
b) Demonstrate appreciation for and sensitivity to the diversity among individuals.
Relationships with the Community
a) Assist the principal in assessing the needs of parents and community members and involving them in decision-making.
b) Assist in promoting the vision, mission, programs, activities, and services of the school/district.

Essential Functions of the Job:
Must possess the ability to:
Serve as the building leader when the Principal is out of the building.
Maintain a safe environment, proper student conduct and student discipline.
Exercise decisive leadership in crisis situations.
Promote an effective learning climate in the school.
Understand and communicate developmental needs of adolescent learners.
Assist in the design of a master school schedule and complete all scheduling functions.
Specialty Areas:
Must be able to:
Apply knowledge of Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, MCAS and Alternative Assessment practices.
Evaluate programs and make proposals for improvement.
Lead the school in implementing program improvements.
Promote inter and intra-department collaboration.
Demonstrate clear and concise written and oral communications skills with administration, staff and parents.
Physical and Environmental Demands:
The physical and environmental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Ability to work in a normal office environment.
Ability to freely move about the building.
Ability to utilize computers and other administrative technologies appropriate to the position.
Ability to perform some job responsibilities outside of regular school hours, including attending school-sponsored activities, functions, and athletic events.
Qualification:
Master’s Degree in the appropriate discipline or educational administration.
Valid Massachusetts license as Principal/Assistant Principal (9-12).
Experience in school administration and supervision.
Demonstrated skills in organizational development, planning,
decision-making, and interpersonal and community relations.
Experience and training in working with adolescents.
Minimum of three years as a classroom teacher.
Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check (C.O.R.I.)

Work Year: In accordance with the Bedford Education Association Contract
Reports to: High School Principal
Supervises: Teachers and other personnel as assigned by the principal.
