Bellingham Technical College invites applications for a Continuing Education Instructor for Flagging & Traffic Control. Teaching assignments are expected to begin after hiring.
 
Flagging courses have variable schedules but are generally held on Saturdays, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., two to three Saturdays per quarter with additional times and days as the need arises.  Courses are taught throughout the academic year, Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer quarters.
 
Course work to teach includes traffic control, signs, channelization, general safety procedures, devices used, and practical applications.
 
CE Instructor positions are part-time, quarterly and temporary and employment for this position is contingent on meeting minimum enrollment.

  • Plan and teach flagging and traffic control courses during the times and dates specified by the quarterly schedule;
  • Provide a course syllabus for every quarter; Keep curriculum current per Evergreen Safety Council and Washington State requirements;
  • Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student's needs;
  • Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently and return student work promptly to promote maximum learning;
  • Maintain required student records;
  • Follow appropriate classroom management procedures and deal consistently and fairly with all students;
  • Work with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds and experiences;
  • Demonstrate respect for others;
  • Stay current in subject matter by maintaining instructor certification;
  • Learn and use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate;
  • Adhere to the assigned class schedule, starting and conducting class prepared and finishing on time; 
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to Bellingham Technical College's Mission; contribute to college-wide goals and activities;
  • Administers written exams and issue card;
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Currently certified as a Traffic Control Supervisor;
  • Currently certified as an approved Washington State Flagger Instructor.
Salary & Benefits:        
Salaries for continuing education instructors will be determined according to the current negotiated salary schedule and college policies and practices. These courses are typically 8 hours and are currently paid at $62.00 per hour. (Rate of pay includes payment for extra duties required for the teaching, prep-time, meetings, office hours, and professional functions associated with this assignment).

Benefits:  
The following benefits are in accordance with the Bellingham Education Association (BEA) and subject to change with each negotiated contract. Current BEA contract expires June 30, 2025. Benefits include paid sick leave. Sick leave is accrued based on their contracted FTEF multiplied by 7.5 hours for each month in active teaching status.  Other benefits include Employee Assistance Program (EAP), a free counseling & referral program; potential flexible and/or remote schedules. No additional benefits.
