Transportation Mechanic

Primary Purpose: Perform major mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance work with minimal supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles. Perform assigned work following established policies and procedures. Major Responsibilities and Duties: Perform major and minor mechanical repairs, preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and inspections on all district vehicles in a timely and efficient manner and without supervision. Maintain accurate, up-to-date preventive maintenance records. Rebuild, replace, or repair major vehicle components, assemblies, and systems including engines, transmissions, suspensions, electrical, and cooling systems. Estimate time and materials required to perform major repairs. Check, adjust brakes and/or replace any defect found during each school bus preventative maintenance (4000 miles or as designated). Respond to breakdowns and/or accidents as quickly as possible; determine if repairs are to be made on-site or attempt to move the bus to the terminal. Coordinate with the dispatcher to ensure there are enough buses to cover routes. Check and repair electrical, heating, air conditioning and cooling systems. Request necessary parts form Shop Foreman. Obtain and maintain license by the Department of Public Safety in order to perform state motor vehicle inspection. Serve as substitute driver for any bus route (if licensed) or drive white fleet as needed. Safety : Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures. Ensure that shop, equipment, and tools are in safe operating condition. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor. Other: Operate buses and vehicles as needed. Perform other duties as assigned by Director of Transportation or Shop Foreman.
