Job Title: Cutting Operator

Department: Cutting Department

Reports To: Cutting Department Supervisor

Summary: Performs a variety of operations utilizing primarily Gateway Precision Technologies hot-wire cutting equipment to cut, shape, or form Expanded Polystyrene (EPS foam) parts to customer specifications as well as packaging finished product, via wrapping in plastic film via an automated wrapper, placing in cardboard boxes, and/or putting on wooden pallets to ready the parts for shipment. Consistently acts as a representative of Benchmark Foam by personifying the company’s Core Values of Integrity, Commitment, and Excellence.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned, including cross-training and/or working in other departments.

Interprets basic drawings, program sheets, instructions or process sheets to determine work to be done. Reviews specifications to determine machining sequence and dimensions of finished parts. Uses tape measure to precisely measure required cutting wire spacing and dimensions of finished parts.

In the absence of Cutting Lead, uses knowledge of cutting concepts, theories & terminology to perform machine setups, tests, adjustments, changes fixtures or wires, and produces quality first parts. Produces machined parts by operating cutting machines. Performs a variety of inspection and gauging operations to ensure maintenance of quality standards and specifications. Performs product inspection and packaging. Maintains quality and safety standards. Keeps records and maintains supplies and equipment, reporting repair needs to Cutting Lead.

Develops and maintains all necessary process documentation. Analyzes existing processes, then recommends methods and procedures to make processes more efficient. Operates fork truck to move various materials.

Job Specific Competencies:

Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills: Master simple calculations. Ability to add and subtract multiple digit numbers and to multiply and divide multiple digit numbers. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. Ability to read tape measure to 1/16 inch.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or blueprint form. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with situations involving a variety of solutions.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of basic computer software/hardware.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Current South Dakota Class 1 - Car/Light Truck Driver's License recommended.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
