POSITION SUMMARY
The Controller is responsible for recording, summarizing, interpreting, and reporting the financial transactions of the college. This role oversees the accounting functions, including the preparation, analysis, and distribution of financial statements, maintenance of the annual operating budget, general ledger oversight, and financial transaction recording. Additionally, the Controller manages cash and investment transactions and ensures compliance with tax regulations. This position plays a key role in maintaining financial integrity and supporting the institution’s fiscal health.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Budget Development, Reporting, and Analysis
a. Collaborate with management and budget managers to develop the college’s annual budget.
b. Oversee the preparation and distribution of financial reports.
c. Provide guidance to budget managers on budget oversight and inquiries.
d. Analyze budget-to-actual variances and address discrepancies with management.
e. Manage external reporting of the college’s financial information
a. Lead the preparation for the annual audit and fiscal year-end close.
b. Prepare and analyze financial reports for the cabinet and board.
c. Compile and interpret financial data to support decision-making.
d. Assist in the preparation of full financial statements for audit, including the college’s balance sheet, statement of activities and cash flow reports.
3. General Ledger Maintenance
a. Establish and maintain general ledger accounts.
4. Financial Transactions and Reconciliation
a. Oversee the recording, posting, and reconciliation of financial transactions to ensure accuracy
and timeliness.
5. Tax and Grant Compliance
a. Supervise the preparation of the annual IRS Form 990.
b. Oversee the preparation and filing of monthly sales tax returns.
c. Ensure compliance with grant treasury management and reporting requirements.
d. Manage bond compliance obligations.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
- Education: A bachelor’s degree in accounting.
- Experience: A minimum of five to eight years of experience in accounting or financial management, preferably within an educational or nonprofit setting.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in accounting software, Microsoft Excel, and financial reporting tools.
- Certifications: CPA or similar professional certification preferred but not required.
