POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Public Works Driver

Department: Public Works

Reports To: Director of Public Works

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Public Works Director, employees in this position perform a variety of tasks related to the operation and maintenance of equipment, vehicles, facilities and tools. Assignments mostly involve working with members of a crew, and at times, working independently. Bensalem residency is a requirement.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.   • Performs routine maintenance, using a variety of equipment, including, but not limited to: various hand tools, jackhammer, small and large trucks up to 26,000 GVW w/wo trailers, aerial bucket truck, and grass cutting mowers/ tractors on roadways, municipal facilities, park grounds and facilities, rights-of-way and other public property, stormwater facilities, etc.
  • Operates snow removal vehicles and related equipment during the winter to maintain streets and public grounds, including public parking lots, as well as repairs mailboxes damaged during snow plow operations.
  • Assists with the placement of bituminous asphalt involving patching or paving operations on roads and parking lots.
  • Assists with the placement of wet concrete involving repair or construction work.
  • Follows safety requirements, including, but not limited to: immediately reporting all accidents, unsafe conditions, and dangerous acts to Public Works Director.
  • Completes daily work assignments by recording job assignments, performing the necessary and required work in an acceptable manner, and reporting to the Public Works Director the status of the assignment in addition to any issues of concerns discovered while performing assignments.
  • Hauls trash, cold or hot patch and other materials.
  • Checks fuel, oil, water and tire pressure on all equipment.
  • Performs preventative maintenance as required.
  • Responds to call-outs after normal working hours.
  • Performs all other duties as required.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of general construction, repair, and maintenance principles, as well as methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities;
  • Knowledge of general equipment, machinery, and tools used in construction activities;
  • Knowledge of equipment operation, occupational hazards, and proper safety procedures to prevent work place hazards;
  • Ability to acquire and retain knowledge related to the methods and techniques of storm sewer repair, maintenance, and installation, and roadway repair and maintenance;
  • Ability to learn proper operation and care of heavy duty equipment and machinery;
  • Ability to work safely and effectively communicate verbally, in person and over the phone, and radio;
  • Ability to address the general public tactfully and courteously, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, public officials, and the general public;
  • Ability to apply knowledge of operations and procedures to make consistent decisions;
  • Thorough knowledge of the traffic laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  • Must possess a valid PA Class III driver’s license, as well as a CDL class B license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to work in a variety of outdoor weather and variable environmental conditions;
  • Ability to perform heavy manual work for extended periods of time;
  • Ability to work safely in the work place, outdoors and indoors, and near moving mechanical parts, as well as moving vehicles in heavy traffic areas.
  • Ability to be subject to possible exposure to hazardous materials and infectious agents;
  • Ability to balance, climb, squat, kneel, bend, crawl, stretch, maneuver in tight spaces, and use hands and fingers to handle equipment to perform duties;
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move at least fifty (50) pounds with or without assistance and up to one hundred (100) pounds with assistance;
  • Ability to perform work requiring close, distant, peripheral, and color vision capabilities;
  • Ability to operate tools and equipment consisting of, but not limited to: motor vehicles, generators, pumps, gauges, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, chain saws, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, calculator, and a variety of other equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential function of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee mainly works in outside weather conditions, including at times extreme heat or cold. The employee may be exposed to the risk of electrical shock or to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
