POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Public Works Seasonal Worker
Department: Public Works
Reports To: Director of Public Works
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Public Works Director, employees in this position perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of parks, open spaces, grounds, turf and related facilities. Assignments mostly involve working with members of a crew, and at times, working independently.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Mows and maintains open space areas and parks, mows lawns, weeds, plants, cleans and maintains courts and picks up trash.
- Carries out the seeding, top dressing, soil conditioning and watering.
- Operates tractors, mowers, weedwackers, trucks, and other small equipment as needed.
- Keeps records of work completed
- Follows safety requirements, including, but not limited to: immediately reporting all accidents, unsafe conditions, and dangerous acts to Public Works Director.
- Completes daily work assignments by recording job assignments, performing the necessary and required work in an acceptable manner, and reporting to the Public Works Director the status of the assignment in addition to any issues of concerns discovered while performing assignments.
- Checks fuel, oil, water and tire pressure on all equipment.
- Performs all other duties as required.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of general equipment, machinery, and tools used in maintenance activities;
- Knowledge of equipment operation, occupational hazards, and proper safety procedures to prevent work place hazards;
- Ability to acquire and retain knowledge related to the methods and techniques of storm sewer repair, maintenance, and installation, and roadway repair and maintenance;
- Ability to learn proper operation and care of equipment and machinery;
- Ability to work safely and effectively communicate verbally, in person and over the phone, and radio;
- Ability to address the general public tactfully and courteously, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, public officials, and the general public;
- Ability to apply knowledge of operations and procedures to make consistent decisions;
- Must possess a valid PA driver’s license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Ability to work in a variety of outdoor weather and variable environmental conditions;
- Ability to perform heavy manual work for extended periods of time;
- Ability to work safely in the work place, outdoors and indoors, and near moving mechanical parts, as well as moving vehicles in heavy traffic areas.
- Ability to be subject to possible exposure to hazardous materials and infectious agents;
- Ability to balance, climb, squat, kneel, bend, crawl, stretch, maneuver in tight spaces, and use hands and fingers to handle equipment to perform duties;
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move at least fifty (50) pounds with or without assistance and up to one hundred (100) pounds with assistance;
- Ability to perform work requiring close, distant, peripheral, and color vision capabilities;
- Ability to operate tools and equipment consisting of, but not limited to: motor vehicles, generators, pumps, gauges, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, chain saws, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, calculator, and a variety of other equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential function of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee mainly works in outside weather conditions, including at times extreme heat or cold. The employee may be exposed to poisonous plants and insects and the risk of electrical shock or to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
