- Work collaboratively with the building principal and teachers to plan and implement appropriate instruction to meet the needs of all students
- Work collaboratively with the building principal and teachers to implement the District 2 curriculum for literacy and reading intervention.
- Know what the research has established as effective practices for struggling readers.
- Know how to use assessment data to monitor learning and guide instruction.
- Know a variety of activities to increase vocabulary and oral language development.
- Collaborate with teachers to recommend materials and resources for teaching complete literacy.
- Have strong skills in the six areas of literacy: phonemic awareness, word identification skills, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and writing.
- Current Illinois Teaching Licensure with Reading Endorsement
- Training and/or experience with elementary students
- Broad-based knowledge of curriculum, teaching methodologies, and assessment, the State of Illinois Goals for Education, and various media.
- Ability to read and communicate effectively with employees of the district.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions provided in either written, diagram or oral form.
- Work involves walking, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects or controls, and reaching with hands and arms.
- Vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

A Reading Specialist is a specially prepared professional who has responsibility for the literacy performance
of readers in general or struggling readers in particular. The Reading Specialist in this role works primarily with
struggling readers through individualized plans and small group instruction. They also instructs teachers as part
