POSITION SUMMARY
The Laboratory Administrative Assistant supports the daily operations of the laboratory by performing administrative and clerical tasks. This role ensures efficient workflow and compliance with hospital policies and regulatory requirements, maintaining accurate records and providing exceptional customer service to patients, staff, and external partners. Performs order entry of tests as necessary, labels all specimens requiring testing in the clinical laboratory. Ensures that specimens are routed to appropriate areas for testing. Performs waived complexity testing as required under the direction of a staff technologist. Processes all specimens for reference laboratory testing.
Essential Functions
- Inventory Management:
- Maintain and monitor inventory lists on a weekly basis.
- Understand and access Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) as needed.
- Compliance and Safety:
- Adhere to professional standards, hospital policies, procedures, and all relevant regulations to protect the hospital community.
- Administrative Support:
- Assist the Laboratory Director with administrative tasks.
- Perform clerical duties requiring independent judgment within hospital guidelines.
- Manage and audit procedures, forms, and documentation to ensure accuracy.
- Coordinate and organize meetings and huddles through calendar invitations.
- Organize and maintain files and confidential documents.
- Generate laboratory reports as requested.
- Customer Service:
- Provide exceptional service to patients and team members.
- Professionally handle phone calls.
- Laboratory Operations:
- Clear result fax queue efficiently.
- Wear PPE at all times and use proper techniques when handling hazardous materials.
- Assist with specimen management, testing, and other assigned duties.
- Ensure specimens are correctly routed for testing.
- Perform waived complexity testing under the supervision of a staff technician.
- Process specimens for reference laboratory testing.
- Accurately order, receive, and manage specimens, rejecting those that are inappropriately collected or labeled.
- Occasionally cover duties at the blood draw stations.
- Health and Safety:
- Maintain sanitary work areas by following health and safety protocols.
- Practice infection control standards at all times.
- Perform basic maintenance checks on laboratory equipment.
- Resolve issues related to sending out samples.
- Additional Tasks:
- Complete special projects and administrative tasks as assigned.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
- Effective and professional communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to perform detailed work, multitask, and solve problems in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to quickly understand and follow directions.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Basic computer skills.
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) Certification or ability to obtain.
- CPR certification per Benson Hospital Policy.
- Must pass a Color Blind Test.
