Summary
The Director of Finance and Operations ("DFO") directs Berman & Simmons' financial planning and reporting and accounting practices, as well as its relationship with lending institutions, shareholders, and the financial community. The DFO is responsible for overseeing the Firm's Accounting, IT, and Service departments, as well as all office facilities. The DFO is one of the Firm's three senior Administrators and reports to the Managing Director.

The Director of Finance and Operations ("DFO") directs Berman & Simmons' financial planning and reporting and accounting practices, as well as its relationship with lending institutions, shareholders, and the financial community. The DFO is responsible for overseeing the Firm's Accounting, IT, and Service departments, as well as all office facilities. The DFO is one of the Firm's three senior Administrators and reports to the Managing Director.
Essential Responsibilities
- Oversees and directs accounting, tax, real estate, and insurance activities for the Firm.
- Works closely with the Managing Director on current and long-range objectives, cash management, and compliance.
- Maintains relationships with financial institutions on lines of credit and funds management.
- Ensures that the systems and procedures are in place to maintain proper accounting records.
- Reviews the operating results of the Firm, compares them to established objectives, and takes steps to ensure that appropriate measures are taken when necessary.
- Interprets the financial statements and the daily operating controls (DOC) regularly and informs the Managing Director of developing trends.
- Timely preparation and issuance of the Firms' monthly financial statements and other necessary reports for the shareholders.
- Maintains close working relationship with independent CPAs to ensure adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and tax code and advises shareholders regarding any operational adjustments needed to accommodate tax code revisions.
- Maintains close working relationship with legal counsel to ensure the Firm's financial activities are properly conducted, documented, and reported.
- Continuously works to establish, maintain, and monitor an effective internal control environment.
- Negotiates with insurers to provide insurance coverage and works with the HR Director when reviewing health benefits.
- Continually strives to improve data integrity and information reporting throughout the Firm.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable government finance regulations, including filing and/or maintaining of required forms, payroll taxes and deposits, income taxes, retirement plan records, etc.
- Works with Managing Director and outside counsel to complete all corporate filings.
- Responsible for all office facilities, including project management, disaster recovery, and emergency response planning.
- Plan administrator for the 401(k) plan through Fidelity.
- Oversees firm travel plans for individuals and groups.
- Oversees publications, subscriptions, and legal research platform.
- Helps organize Firm functions.
- Manages Accounting, Service, and IT department employees in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
- Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, or finance. CPA or MBA strongly preferred.
- At least 10 years of relevant work experience, including experience in a leadership role.
- Director level experience and experience in a professional services environment a plus.
