What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sanitation Supervisor (Night Shift) position at Bernatello's?
The Sanitation Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the sanitation team and ensuring that Bernatello's Foods facilities are maintained at the highest level of cleanliness and sanitation. This role plays a vital part in leading the company's Food Safety and Food Defense Programs, ensuring compliance with FDA and SQF requirements, and supporting production by ensuring equipment is cleaned and sanitized on time to achieve 100% on-time startups and maintain the highest food safety standards.
Production of Sanitation Oversight
- Supervise the cleaning and sanitizing of the entire production facility, ensuring all tasks are completed efficiently and in a timely manner to meet 100% on-time production startups, and in accordance with company standards and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate and assist with moving and handling equipment, hoses, and chemical containers.
- Ensure the sanitation team performs all tasks related to sanitation and production equipment upkeep, adhering to the highest food safety standards
- Schedule and assign daily tasks to the sanitation crew, ensuring adequate coverage and prioritizing critical areas.
- Monitor the performance of sanitation equipment and report any maintenance needs to the relevant department.
Quality/Food Safety Management
- Ensure adherence to all GMP, SOP, HACCP, and SQF and (if applicable) GFCO /gluten-free requirements, guiding the sanitation team in compliance with food safety protocols.
- Conduct routine audits of sanitation practices to ensure compliance with FDA, FSIS/USDA, and internal food safety standards.
- Lead by example in maintaining a culture of food safety, ensuring all team members understand the importance of sanitation in the food production process.
- Work closely with the Quality Assurance team to address any sanitation-related non-conformities or corrective actions.
Safety Leadership
- Maintain a safe work environment by enforcing cleanliness, promptly addressing hazards, and ensuring that the sanitation area complies with OSHA and company safety regulations.
- Lead the sanitation team in following all safety policies and procedures, including safe handling of cleaning chemicals and use of equipment.
- Conduct regular safety meetings and training sessions to reinforce proper sanitation techniques and safety practices.
- Investigate and report any accidents or near-misses and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Team Leadership and Training
- Lead, train, and mentor the sanitation team to ensure they are proficient in cleaning techniques, food safety regulations, and equipment operation.
- Act as the Nightshift Production Supervisor in their absence.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide coaching or disciplinary action as necessary.
- Develop and implement training programs for new sanitation employees and provide ongoing training to ensure continuous improvement.
- Cultivate a team-focused environment that prioritizes accountability, precision, and a dedication to maintaining top sanitation standards.
- Continue to promote and strengthen a unified "ONE TEAM" culture.
Inventory and Chemical Management
- Manage inventory of cleaning supplies and chemicals, ensuring proper storage, labeling, and availability for sanitation operations.
- Oversee the safe handling and use of sanitation chemicals, ensuring compliance with safety data sheets (SDS) and company policies.
- Coordinate with vendors to maintain adequate stock levels and provide necessary sanitation supplies.
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of sanitation activities, including cleaning schedules, chemical usage, and any deviations or corrective actions.
- Prepare and submit reports on sanitation activities, food safety inspections, and regulatory compliance to management.
- Participate in audits by regulatory agencies and third-party auditors, ensuring full compliance with all sanitation-related requirements.
- Report any equipment failures or damages occurring during the sanitation process to Maintenance leadership and/or record them in E-maint.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify areas for improvement in the sanitation process and recommend changes to enhance efficiency, food safety, and overall sanitation practices.
- Stay up to date with industry trends and innovations in sanitation technologies, tools, and best practices to enhance the sanitation program.
- Collaborate with other departments to resolve sanitation-related issues and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abillities
- Ability to understand, speak, and write in English.
- Ability to work with pork, dairy, soy, wheat, egg, shellfish, nut products, and fish.
- Strong leadership, teamwork, and communication skills.
- Excellent organization and time management.
- Attention to detail and proficiency in using sanitation equipment and chemicals.
- Knowledge of food safety regulations (FDA, USDA, SQF, HACCP) and sanitation documentation.
- Ability to work in fast-paced environments, both individually and as part of a team.
Experience & Training (preffered)
- 3-5 years of experience in sanitation within a food manufacturing or food processing environment.
- Previous supervisory or leadership experience, preferably overseeing a sanitation team or production crew.
- Experience working with food safety programs such as GMP, HACCP, SQF, FDA, (if applicable) GFCO/gluten-free or FSIS/USDA requirements.
- Hands-on experience with sanitation equipment, chemicals, and cleaning processes specific to food production.
- Experience conducting audits, inspections, or participating in third-party food safety audits.
