Job Summary:
The Head Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and well-functioning school environment. This position oversees custodial staff, ensures daily cleaning and maintenance tasks are completed efficiently, and coordinates repairs and facility upkeep. The Head Custodian plays a vital role in supporting the overall operations of the school by ensuring a welcoming and sanitary space for students, staff, and visitors. This individual needs to be a good team player and have the ability to pivot when needed.
Key Responsibilities:
Custodial Duties:

Ensure all school facilities, including classrooms, hallways, restrooms, gymnasiums, and common areas, are clean, sanitized, and in good working order.

Perform routine cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, and trash removal.

Address emergency cleanups, spills, and urgent maintenance needs promptly.

Monitor and maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment, ensuring proper storage and use.
Supervisory Responsibilities:

Train, schedule, and oversee custodial staff, ensuring work is completed to a high standard.

Assign daily tasks and special projects to custodial team members.

Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback to custodial staff.

Ensure compliance with safety regulations and proper use of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
Maintenance & Repairs:

Conduct routine inspections of the school building and grounds to identify maintenance needs.

Perform minor repairs such as fixing leaks, replacing light bulbs, and maintaining HVAC filters.

Coordinate with maintenance staff and external vendors for major repairs and maintenance projects.

Ensure school grounds, sidewalks, and parking lots are clear of debris, snow, and other hazards.
Safety & Security:

Ensure doors, windows, and access points are secure at the end of the school day.

Respond to and report any safety hazards, vandalism, or security concerns.

Assist with emergency preparedness procedures, including fire drills and lockdowns.
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent and provide a copy to HR upon
experience. (NOTE: It will be the responsibility of the applicant hired to submit the BCPS
verification of experience form to their prior employer to complete and return to HR.)
