What are the responsibilities and job description for the Administrative Secretary position at Berrien County?
DUTIES:
Performs administrative support tasks, including typing and proofreading documents, compiling data, and maintaining records.
Manages departmental files, schedules meetings and appointments, and coordinates mail distribution.
Interacts with the public, providing assistance and information.
Schedules court hearings and trials, updates records, prepares legal documents, and distributes court calendars.
Assists with office supply inventory, requisitions, and clerical staff training.
Transcribes meeting minutes.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Associate degree in secretarial science or related field and one year of clerical/secretarial work experience;
OR
High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of two years of progressively more responsible clerical/ secretarial work experience, preferably in a legal setting.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license throughout the course of employment.
Candidate must successfully pass a pre-employment physical, including drug testing prior to employment.
A background check will be performed, and employees will be fingerprinted.
Applicant may not have any felony convictions.
Subject to random alcohol and drug testing per the Court’s policy.
Will be required to obtain Notary Public commission upon employment.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Strong communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively and tactfully with individuals from a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds.
Capable of deescalating emotionally charged situations.
TYPING REQUIREMENT:
Must have a typing speed of 55 words per minute net. If you have not taken a typing test with Berrien County, please contact Personnel by phone or email to schedule one.
