What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medium Equipment Operator position at Berrien County?
DUTIES:
- Builds and maintains the public roads, highways, and bridges within the County of Berrien in a safe and proficient manner.
- Operates motor vehicles, including commercial motor vehicles with various attachments affixed, such as front mounted plows, underbody mounted plows, body mounted spreaders, tanks, distributors, and trailers of various sizes and shapes.
- Utilizes various hand and motorized specialty tools, including chain saws, shovels, picks, air hammers, wheelbarrows, grass/tree trimming tools, concrete saws, and posthole diggers. Handles specialized equipment, including front-end loaders, backhoes, tractor mowers, brush chippers, rollers, bucket trucks, distributors and patch trucks.
- Installs, maintains, and repairs road signs, delineators post and buttons, guardrails, right of way fencing and barricades.
- Performs various forms of manual labor, either alone or with fellow workers.
- Assists with patching and sealing operations, manhole and culvert installations and all general road and right of way maintenance.
- Inspects and performs minor maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
- Provides traffic control operations such as flag control, installing, and removing construction signs, etc.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience in a construction trade or truck driving.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must maintain a valid driver’s license with no restrictions on night-time driving.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class-A Michigan Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and appropriate medical cards.
- The physical ability to manually lift and carry up to 80 pounds is essential to job duties.
- Employee will be subject to call-in during off duty hours as dictated by weather conditions.
- Must be available to work shifts exceeding 8 hours as assigned.
