Job Summary:

The Director of Finance plans, organizes, directs, and controls the accounting and control function of the organization, reports operational results, and provides support to fellow leaders.

The Director of Finance effectively and respectfully communicates and collaborates with other leaders and department leads to develop financial reporting, metrics and forecasting tools to support achievement of our short-term and long-term business plan. The Director of Finance is responsible for tracking financial performance against a plan, helping senior management make tactical and strategic decisions by providing periodic reports.

The Director of Finance possesses a forward-thinking attitude, advising executives and other department leads with ways to reduce costs and recommending changes to company processes and policies to achieve goals. This includes but is not limited to planning, data extraction, analyzing, and reporting performance and cost information using common financial tools. The Director of Finance also works closely with Operations to build and maintain budgets in dollars and hours as well as determine estimates-to-complete projections for Manufacturing Labor and Material.

The Functions reporting to the Director of Finance are Accounting, Materials Management (Supply Chain, Purchasing and Warehouse) and IT (future position).

The ideal candidate possesses a high level of curiosity, a track record of growing and leading a team, strong relationship building skills, an eye for process improvement and implementation, and a desire to provide actionable business insights.

Essential Functions:

Accounting and Financial Management

  • Manage the accounting function by developing and implementing industry best practices
  • Ensure proper fiscal management, timely and accurate reporting and analysis. This responsibility includes financial planning, budgeting, accounting, and cash management
  • Generate accurate and reliable financial reports, data, and analysis, month-end financial close, forecasting/budgeting, internal/external audits, owner/corporate reporting, etc.
  • Complete the year-end audit process. Review and approve all reconciliations and audit work papers. Coordinate external auditor's activities, respond to auditor requests, approve all adjustments, reconcile the audit numbers to the property numbers and approve the final audit
  • Prepare and review all monthly and annual financial statements. Investigate, review and analyze the variance explanations, involving the department managers in this process. Take initiative to manage and troubleshoot for respective cost controls and revenue enhancement

Strategic Planning

  • Maintain and improve the corporate multi-year strategic planning financial model including P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow models
  • Utilize strategic planning analytical models to provide recommendations to management team relative to key long-term decisions and initiatives

Financial planning

  • Maintain and refine the corporate annual financial planning models
  • Develop simple, reliable monthly financial forecast process and model (cash flow and P&L)
  • Maintain and improve monthly cash flow analysis and forecasts (rolling 12 months)
  • Develop additional tools and models that help with decision-making and maintain these on a monthly and quarterly basis as required
  • Drive budgeting and forecasting processes
  • Compile annual budget, development, consolidation, review, and presentation
  • Develop forecasts and/or budgets for products, functions and overhead pools
  • Compile budgets and forecasts by obtaining data and information from internal stakeholders
  • Make recommendations to management on financial performance projections using financial and business knowledge and experience
  • Effectively partner with business leads in developing fully loaded COGS model appropriate for the business to drive significant Gross Margin improvements
  • Provide analysis that supports decisions related to capital allocations, develop a capex plan based on information collected from other leaders
  • Support periodic product pricing analysis through preparation of materials, labor and overhead cost inflation actual and forecast impacts

Reporting and analysis

  • Maintain high level analysis of actual period results versus strategic and annual planning targets
  • Initiate variance analyses and provide understanding of operational and financial performance to management
  • Develop simple, reliable monthly reporting document (forecast vs actual, metrics and KPIs)
  • Prepare meaningful analysis on financial trends and key metrics for COGS functions, including inventory transactions, gross margin analytics, and variances.
  • Analyze cost variances, determine root causes, and prepare recommendations and alternatives for improvements
  • Provide monthly managerial reports in Excel and PowerPoint for review with functional heads, which include key metrics, financial results, and variance analysis for all Gross Margin components
  • Investigate material costing and related transactions / questions (purchase orders, receiving, consumption, cost allocation)
  • Compile data from multiple sources and develop performance reports for SG&A labor and non-labor reporting
  • Analyze operational performance and provide reasons for cost and schedule variances, as well as the financial impact, recovery opportunities and delivery impacts
  • Work closely with Product Development team to understand product cost targets (to include development program costs, capex…). Develop reporting to track to actuals.

Process and continuous improvement

  • Cost Accounting Subject Matter Expert with respect to ERP and other operational systems (e.g., Inventory/Warehouse, Materials Requirement Planning)
  • Identify and implement opportunities to streamline and improve existing business processes to improve performance and output quality across the organization
  • Assist departments to build and maintain financial KPIs to evaluate operational performance
  • Conduct risk assessment initiatives and risk mitigation efforts, maintaining and/or creating internal controls and segregation of duties, keeping up with local legislation changes, contract/license/permit administration, and ensuring compliance
  • Ad hoc assignments that improve financial and operational processes

General responsibilities

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Statistics, Math, Business Administration or related quantitative field
  • 5 years of relevant experience in Accounting, Financial Accounting or Financial Planning and Analysis, focused on cost and inventory accounting in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience with Financial Modeling, Product Costing, Inventory Management, Variance Analysis
  • Experience with Actual and Standard Cost Methodology
  • Demonstrated experience in P&L analysis, Cash Flow forecasting, Capital Planning, and inventory analysis
  • Proficient in analyzing and understand profitability levers, cost drivers, and existing KPIs, as well as capable of developing appropriate KPIs and improve existing ones
  • Strong mastery of financial statement modeling
  • Expert-level Microsoft Excel modeling skills
  • Experience with ERP and related tools for reporting and analysis
  • Excellent PowerPoint presentation skills
  • Comfortable in creating processes versus just maintaining them
  • Excited to teach/train a diverse team in concepts, application, analysis, and interpretation
  • Comfortable with team-based work structure; ability to remain flexible to change within the work environment and scope of responsibility
  • Exceptional analytical skills and a passion for diving into numbers and problem solving
  • High attention to detail for data integrity and quality of reporting
  • Highly organized and great at planning the unforeseen, prioritizing responsibilities and tasks
  • Proactive and results oriented approach
  • Proven high performer with the ability to work autonomously and take initiative
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts simply and thoroughly to the team and to senior leadership
