Working in a collaborative mode with Clinical Ethicists of the Ethics Support Service, this role promotes the Mission of BIDMC as a values-driven academic medical center by supporting ethics-related services and education to staff across the medical center. The Mission of Ethics Programs at BIDMC is to promote a culture in which all BIDMC staff appreciate the importance of the ethical aspects of their work (their decisions, actions, character, and morale), and have the support they need to do that work in accordance with BIDMC's and their own highest moral standards.
This is a 20-hour, benefits-eligible opportunity.
Job Description:
Responsibilities:
- Provides high-quality formal and informal multidisciplinary ethics consultations with staff, patients and families, and coordinates follow-up from these sessions.
- Organize and participate in clinical ethics rounds, and collaborate with clinical teams, patients and families, and administrative staff to address ethical issues.
- Organizes and leads bi-monthly Ethics Case Conferences.
- Hold the Ethics Support Service (ESS) on-call pager and responds appropriately with on-demand ethics assessment and consultation.
- Develops and provides ethics education for staff, including physicians, nurses, chaplains, social work, and other members of the health care team.
- Develops, reviews, and revises medical center policies that require ethical guidance and oversight.
- Evaluates and improves healthcare ethics consultation methods, approaches, and ethics quality improvement.
- Documents in the medical record.
Required Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in relevant field such as Ethics, Nursing, Philosophy, Social Work, Rehabilitation Therapy or Theology; or an equivalent terminal degree (JD, DO, MD) with relevant coursework (preferably Master’s in Bioethics) and/or 1-2 year full-time Fellowship in Bioethics or Clinical Medical Ethics, or equivalent.
- 3 years’ clinical healthcare experience preferably in an acute care, academic hospital setting (e.g. medicine, nursing, social work, ethics, clinical psychology, chaplaincy).
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, oral and written communication skills in order to mediate challenging ethical scenarios with patients, families, clinicians, and other staff.
- Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
- Healthcare Ethics Consultant Certification (HEC-C) or eligible for certification within 1-2 years of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least 3 years ethics consultation experience in a high-volume setting.
- Healthcare Ethics Consultation Certification completed.
