What are the responsibilities and job description for the Criminal Court Clerk position at Bexar County?
Under general supervision is responsible for maintaining dockets; preparing court documents; coordinating court appearances; administering oaths; preparing testing orders; performing high volume of data entry; answering questions; maintaining cases; calculates jail time credit; and performs related duties as required.
- Coordinates appearance of parties and maintains hearing, jury and non-jury trial daily dockets
- Prepares and issues legal documents which may include court orders, judgments, warrants, HIV Aids testing orders, or requests for psychiatric examinations
- Determines appropriate documents to present to the Judge in order to facilitate a determination of guilt and/or sentencing
- Administers oaths for parties involved in individual cases
- Responsible for notifying the Department of Public Safety of all DWI and drug convictions
- Performs data entry of all court proceedings and court orders including appeal information
- Provides clear, concise and accurate information to the judge, general public and law enforcement officials in person and by telephone regarding court procedures
- Responsible for overseeing intake and proper records management of all documents involved in case
- Calculates jail time credit used in determining proper release date of defendants to the Texas Department of Corrections
- Arranges courtroom procedure while maintaining order in the courtroom; Notifies defendants of their options and responsibilities
- Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required
- High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate, and three (3) years judicial system experience;or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Knowledge of the Texas Criminal Procedures Code and rules; good knowledge of criminal courtroom procedures; and good knowledge of basic legal terminology and court judgments
- Skill in managing multiple projects simultaneously utilizing sound time, planning, and organizing skill sets
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to accurately enter data; ability to perform basic mathematical calculations; ability to operate personal computer utilizing various software programs including CRT system; ability to operate a typewriter and basic office equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees, Elected/Appointed Officials, attorneys and the general public
- Acts in the name of the District Clerk and shall perform all official acts as may be lawfully done and performed by such clerk in person, pursuant to 51.303 of the government code
- Must be bondable
- Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation by the District Clerk
- Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
- May be required to work shift work, flex hours, weekends, and holidays
