What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanic I / Heavy Fleet Maintenance position at Bexar County?
Under direct supervision, is responsible for repairing or overhauling gasoline/diesel light/heavy trucks and road construction equipment including welding, electrical and light body work repairs; and performs related duties as required.
- Repairs or overhauls gasoline/diesel engines, and hydraulic, fuel, cooling, and suspension systems for light/heavy trucks and road construction equipment
- Removes and replaces or repairs transmissions and clutch systems
- Performs brake system repairs and replacement of brake system parts including wheel bearing replacement and packing
- Performs preventive maintenance work on medium and heavy duty trucks and road equipment
- Operates testing equipment, troubleshoots and repairs electrical and mechanical systems
- Performs work on disabled equipment and vehicles on roadways
- Performs road tests on vehicles and road equipment
- Assists with welding and fabrication work for repair of equipment metal components
- Maintains record of all repairs and services performed
- Performs related duties as required
- Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate, and two (2) years experience in automotive and light road construction equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Knowledge of the different types of hand and power tools; knowledge of the operation and purpose of different lubricants; knowledge of diesel engines operations; knowledge of the operation of electronic testing equipment
- Skill in the operation of hand and power tools, and welding equipment
- Ability to drive different road equipment and diesel vehicles; ability to road test vehicles and diagnose malfunctions and vehicle operating systems; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees, auto part vendors and the general public
- Must have a valid Texas Class A Commercial driver's license (CDL) with Tank and Air Brakes within six (6) months of hire or promotion
- Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
- Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
- Required to be on call 24 hours a day
- Working conditions are primarily indoors with occasional outdoor exposure
- Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions
- Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, hazardous material, flammable and toxic fumes (battery acids, cleaning solvents, gasoline, etc.) rough terrain, poisonous plants, dirt, dust, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises
- Frequently moves equipment weighing up to 25 pounds
- Occasionally moves objects weighing up to 75 pounds
- Will frequently communicate with co-workers; must be able to exchange accurate information
- Frequently moves about buildings and vehicles
- Constantly positions self to perform essential functions
- Constantly operates tools and equipment
