JOB SUMMARY:
Performs a variety of police work for the school system involving policy and law enforcement, the protection of life and property, and the prevention and investigation of crime.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Reports To: Zone Sergeant
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Monitors and patrols designated areas to preserve law and order and to prevent and discover the commission of crime and/or disturbance; investigates reports of criminal activity or violations of school or board policy.
- Directs and controls traffic and pedestrians at crossings and intersections as necessary; investigates suspicious circumstances, persons, vehicles, etc.
- Completes and files incident reports, traffic accident reports, intelligence reports, booking reports, patrol log sheets, and other pertinent paperwork in an efficient and timely manner.
- Collects, records, marks, and secures evidence at crime scenes; interviews and questions people as necessary.
- Obtains and serves arrest and search warrants as necessary; testifies in court as required.
- Administers first aid when appropriate.
- Participates in continuing study and training activities to achieve and maintain required skills; maintains a high proficiency level with the service handgun and other equipment issued by the department.
- Subdues offenders and criminals by using the minimum amount of force needed to protect the officer and other persons.
- Obeys and observes the policies, rules, and procedures of the Campus Police Department and the Bibb County Board of Education.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma or State Approved High School Equivalency; Associate’s degree preferred. Prior experience and training in law enforcement is preferred. Or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or training that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of policies, practices, and procedures of law enforcement.
- Knowledge of criminal and investigative procedures.
- Knowledge of basic first aid.
- Some knowledge of local, state, and federal laws.
- Skill in the use of firearms and other police equipment.
- Skill in the use of computers and software applications related to the essential functions of the job.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with administrators, teachers, students, and the general public.
- Ability to deal courteously and diplomatically with school system employees, students, and the general public.
- Ability to receive, understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to carry and effectively use firearms and other assigned equipment.
- Ability to drive safely.
- Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
CERTIFICATION, LICENSE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Georgia P.O.S.T. (Peace Officer Standards and Training) certification in law enforcement must be obtained within one (1) year of employment. Current and valid Georgia driver’s license is required. An extensive background investigation which includes a polygraph test and a drug screening will be conducted prior to employment. Random drug screenings will be conducted after employment. Physical agility tests conducted on a regular basis after employment.
