POSITION PURPOSE
Established through the support of Best Buy Corporate and The Clubhouse Network, this position is the catalyst for creativity, innovation, and exploration through the use of technology and digital media platforms. With a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, the Big Brothers Big Sisters Miami - Best Buy Teen Tech Center Coordinator will help drive students through theses creative processes and direct the application of the Center's technology and arts curriculum. As a creative, the coordinator will support the imagination of students interested in visual/digital arts, design, and music creation. As a tech - savvy professional, the coordinator will instruct and support students who strive to learn and apply various technical skills that include but are not limited to coding, hardware/software development, music production and engineering.
Key Relationships:
The STEM Tech Coordinator will work closely with the Programs Department of BBBS Miami.
Core Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the planning and implementation of hands-on, project-based after-school and out-of-school STEAM learning that includes instruction, evaluation, STEAM camp, field trips, college tours, community service events or service-learning projects and workshops.
- Responsible for the implementation and facilitation of education and youth development curriculum specifically related to middle school and high school that includes but is not limited to college preparation, financial literacy, science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM), career exploration and health and wellness.
- Plan, lead, and participate in meaningful yearly STEAM camp, assist with setting camp goals and objectives, and ensure a positive camping experience for each youth.
- Maintain a minimum caseload of 40 youth participants.
- Actively facilitate the Case Management Process. This includes completing all necessary client intake documents, completing programmatic assessments (three times a year); develop and revise service plans every 90 days with each participant assigned.
- Facilitate group sessions, including, but not limited to: STEAM, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Groups, Academic Support/Tutoring Groups, and Recreational Sessions, as outlined in the program curriculum.
- Conduct one-on-one mentoring to assist participants in achieving goals outlined in the Service Plan
- Use knowledge of community resources to help participants achieve the goals outlined in their Service Plans.
- Maintain case notes and participant files and ensure that all reporting requirements are adhered to as outlined by the funder and program for every client interaction
- Work collaboratively with community partners and other CUL Departments/Staff in linking clients with needed services.
- Perform other duties/special projects as assigned.
- Provide community outreach to involve a diverse group of young people, parents, teachers, and community leaders in the program.
- Help Teen Tech Center members develop projects (e.g., help them produce ideas, gather materials, get started, locate mentors to work with them, and support their ongoing work).
- Recruit, train, and support volunteer mentors, ensuring they work effectively with youth.
- Work closely with the local Best Buy store to recruit Geek Squad Agents and Blue Shirt volunteers.
- Support youth in planning, including pursuing academic and job opportunities that leverage their Teen Tech Center skills and experience.
- Provide basic computer maintenance, including file management, trouble-shooting, and technical support to Teen Tech Center youth and mentors.
- Provide administrative support for the Clubhouse program, including keeping records of participants and keeping the Tech Center space organized.
- Assist "parent" organization in fund-raising and publicity for the Best Buy Tech Center, communicating the Clubhouse learning philosophy, goals, and results to external sources.
- Participate in The Clubhouse Network, attending Network meetings, sharing ideas and issues, and supporting collaborative projects across sites.
- Support other programs and activities of the "parent" organization with Teen Tech Center expertise and resources, as time permits.
- Leverage Best Buy National Partner relationships to expose members to skill development and media training.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree required
- 3 years of STEAM programming or experience preferred
- 5 years of child welfare experience preferred
Desired skills and experience:
- Proven track record working with youth, in particular young people from underserved neighborhoods.
- Work experience in an informal learning environment.
- Experience with computers and interest in technology as a creative and empowering tool
- Demonstrated ability to reach out to youth, parents, educators, and community leaders
- Interpersonal skills, including an ability to get along with people of diverse backgrounds and abilities and a talent for making people feel welcome and included
- A passion for learning and helping others to learn
- Excellent organizational skills
- Strong computer skills are required especially with case management data systems
- Must be professional, mature and willing to be a role model
Location:
This position is based in Miami, Florida, at BBBS of Miami’s headquarters at 550 NW 42nd Avenue Miami, FL 33126 with 5% of total work time traveling.
Compensation:
The STEM Tech Center Coordinator position is a full-time job. This position is supervised by Asim Pleas, VP of Programs. The salary for this position is between $45-50K depending on experience. BBBS of Miami positions involve regular computer use plus some minimal lifting.
