Program Specialist/Outreach Coordinator – Rio Arriba County and Pojoaque
Big Brothers Big Sisters Mountain Region (BBBSMR) is seeking a dynamic Outreach Coordinator/Program Specialist for Rio Arriba County and Pojoaque. The Program Specialist/Outreach Coordinator will work closely with school districts to grow and maintain school-based programs, including obtaining and managing Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with individual schools. The role involves building relationships with children, parents, and volunteers to establish, monitor, and meet goals for volunteer recruitment, match relationship length, and customer satisfaction. The successful candidate will provide exceptional customer service to volunteers, youth, and families, ensuring effective enrollment, matching, and support. Additionally, they will organize events for volunteers and matches and develop creative strategies to meet volunteer recruitment goals.
Key Responsibilities:
Program Specialist:
- Interview potential Bigs (mentors) and Littles (mentees) to assess strengths, needs, interests, and match preferences, creating tailored matches.
- Community-Based or Site-Based (adult mentors matched with youth ages 5-17).
- School-Based (high school students matched with elementary-age students for weekly on-site meetings).
- Use coaching techniques to support safe, healthy match relationships and child development while adhering to safety and risk management policies.
- Follow Big Brothers Big Sisters Service Delivery Model and BBBSMR Program Manual.
- Accurately document match information in the case management database.
- Monitor match relationships for potential challenges, providing coaching and intervention as necessary.
- Distribute surveys on youth outcomes and mentoring relationship strength.
- Plan and organize activities for matches, attending agency events to support program growth.
- Travel throughout Rio Arriba, Pojoaque, and surrounding counties to support programs and matches, with occasional travel to other BBBSMR regions.
- Collaborate with BBBSMR team to provide high-quality mentoring.
Community Outreach:
- Raise public awareness about BBBSMR’s mentoring services by setting up informational booths at local events.
- Develop and manage relationships with private sector, government, and tribal partners to meet volunteer recruitment goals.
- Work closely with school districts to maintain and grow school-based programs, including obtaining MOUs.
- Identify children in need of mentors through community and school relationships, facilitating the transition from inquiry to enrollment, matching, and support.
- Conduct volunteer recruitment through community relationships, ensuring a smooth process from inquiry to enrollment and support.
- Collaborate with BBBSMR team to support programming and growth in Rio Arriba and Santa Fe counties and surrounding areas.
Job Qualifications:
The ideal candidate is an adaptable, relationship-driven individual with strong organizational, coaching, and critical thinking skills. Previous experience in child or youth services is preferred.
- Education:
Must have a high school diploma/GED and one of the following:
- A bachelor’s degree (or within six months of completion) in a relevant field.
- An associate degree (or two years of higher education) and two years of relevant work experience.
- Four years of relevant work experience in related fields (e.g., social work, counseling, child development).
- Customer Focus:
Demonstrated ability to build rapport with diverse individuals, including families, volunteers, and team members. Experience with intake, assessment, and case management is preferred.
- Communication Skills:
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with proficiency in case management documentation. Special consideration will be given to candidates fluent in Spanish.

Starting Salary Range: $39,125 - $50,000 DOE Excellent Benefits.
