Position Summary:
Under the Supervision of the Staff Accountant, this entry level position is responsible for assisting the fiscal staff of the Big Valley Rancheria by providing administrative support. Administrative support includes greeting customers, filing documents, answering phones, and taking messages. The Accounting Assistant will be expected to cross-train in all Fiscal Department functions to provide seamless coverage when necessary.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Provide excellent customer service to Tribal Members, employees, and vendors.
- Professionally answer inquiries from Tribal Members, vendors, suppliers and employees and research discrepancies.
- Assist with preparation of accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, and payroll as needed.
- Maintain office files and department reports.
- Assists with disbursement of payroll and accounts payable checks.
- Assist with copying and other administrative tasks as needed.
- Provide and/or assist in scanning of finance documents.
- Assist with the input of purchase requisitions for Fiscal and IT Service expenses.
- Assist with monitoring of office supplies and submit PO Requisition to replenish when supplies are low.
- Assist with audits, fact checks, and resolving discrepancies.
- Maintain organization and cleanliness of common areas.
- Held accountable to a high degree, for the accuracy and thoroughness of departmental records.
- Responsible for maintaining the highest level of confidentiality within the department.
- Handle special projects as requested.
- Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or GED is preferred.
- Desired prior knowledge of accounting software, preferably Abila MIP.
- Must be computer literate, proficient in Microsoft Excel with general working knowledge of Word.
- Experience working with Tribes and Tribal programs preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
- Requires an individual with exemplary verbal and written communication skills and supervisory skills.
REASONING ABILITY:
- Requires ability to plan, assign and direct workflow and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public.

Other Requirements
- Must be eligible for coverage under the Tribe’s vehicle insurance policy.
- Must possess a valid California driver’s license. Must be willing to travel locally, regionally, statewide, and/or out-of-state, as necessary, during or after regular working hours.
- Preference in hiring is given to qualified American Indians in accordance with the Indian Preference Act (Title 25 U.S. Code, § 472 and 473). Applicants claiming Indian preference must submit verification by Tribe of affiliation or other acceptable documentation of Tribal Enrollment.
- Must be twenty-one (21) years of age.
- Able to pass a BVR drug test.
- Work involves periods of sitting, walking, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities, and lifting of moderately heavy items, up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to satisfactorily complete a background check and a pre-employment screening.
