About the Binghamton University Libraries:
The Binghamton University Libraries provides research collections in electronic (over 2 million and growing) and print (1.7 million items) formats with an extensive array of databases and e-packages (over 400), archival and distinctive printed materials in Special Collections as well as services with a variety of student-centered study spaces. With three public locations (Glenn G. Bartle Library, Science Library and the University Downtown Center Library) and an off-site Collections Management Facility, our aim is to provide access to primary research materials and resources befitting an R1 research institution.
Binghamton University Libraries seeks a collaborative, visionary, and service-oriented leader for the new position of Director of Access Services. This role provides leadership to a newly-restructured department offering a range of essential services, including circulation, shelving and paging of materials, course reserves and related copyright guidance for the instructional community, media collections, disability services, and public service points where patrons receive assistance with general information needs and first-level reference. The Director will combine a commitment to public service with a forward-thinking approach to utilizing emerging technologies and evidence-based decision-making to continuously develop, implement, and assess library services in this portfolio.
This newly-reorganized department presents a unique opportunity to shape its direction and ensure its success. The ideal candidate will have a background in library customer service, a passion for continuous improvement, and the ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external partners. Excellent leadership, problem-solving, and strategic planning skills are essential.
The position reports to the Sr. Assistant Dean of Research, Learning and Access Services.
Librarianship:
Leadership and Strategy
- Strategic vision: Work with the Sr. Assistant Dean for Research, Learning and Access Services on strategic planning and department goal setting; define priorities for department projects, activities, and innovations.
- Efficiency: Review workflow and staffing with the goal of improving efficiency; document policies, procedures, and decisions; assist with other requests as needed.
- Service excellence: Prioritize customer service, user experience, accessibility, and ease of access across all campus libraries and service locations; assist with service point coverage; assess the effectiveness and impact of circulation, course reserves, and other departmental services to both the university and broader communities.
- Compliance: Work with the Sr. Assistant Dean for Research, Learning and Access Services to ensure university policies and practices regarding building safety, data sharing, patron accounts management, and student employment are being met; stay abreast of any evolving campus or professional guidelines or expectations to ensure department activities comply.
- Embrace new challenges: Evaluate and recommend platforms, partnerships, loan rules, etc. to improve user experience and take advantage of automation possibilities.
- Transform data into insight: Maintain accurate statistics and workflow documentation. Analyze data trends, provide reports and information to library administration and incorporate results into decision-making processes.
- Lead and shape access services practices: Through active engagement in library consortia, professional organizations, and peer networks; advocate for and implement innovative approaches that advance the field; and foster collaborative relationships that improve the user experience.
- Key Contributor to Dean's Library Council: Actively participates on Dean's Library Council; actively aligns with and positively supports the priorities, goals, and direction set by leadership to ensure organizational success; actively puts the Libraries' best interest above that of the department.
Supervision and Management
- Team Leadership: Schedule and supervise the work of staff and student employees; collaboratively identify performance goals, conduct meaningful evaluations, and contribute to a supportive culture.
- Collaborative communication: Foster communication among team members and with other library units.
- Fiscal and ethical responsibility: Oversee and align student employment expenditures with overall Libraries' strategies and goals; oversee fines/fees collection; responsible for facilitating policies for copyright/fair use and data privacy.
- Professional growth: Stay at the forefront of the field by pursuing professional development opportunities, and integrating new knowledge and skills into the work of the department.
- Foster Inclusivity: Participate in a work culture that promotes diversity and inclusion and actively work to eliminate or mitigate the effects of systemic racism and bias.
Scholarship:
- Contributes significantly to the profession to meet the Libraries' standards of scholarship.
Service:
- Participates in library, University and national service.
The Director may need to flex their schedule occasionally to work evenings or weekends due to staff absences and when the library hours change during extended study hours and intercessions.
Job Requirements:
Required:
- Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library or information science program or an ALA-approved foreign equivalent.
- Three years of experience in an academic, public or comparable library environment in a variety of access or public services-related functions such as: circulation, course reserves, open educational resources, interlibrary loan, document delivery, copyright, and/or reference.
- Supervisory or leadership experience.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to resolve issues in a professional and respectful manner.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Preferred:
- Experience improving workflows in access services areas by collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data.
- Experience managing customer service across multiple library locations or branches.
- Experience applying copyright and fair use for course reserves.
- Record of scholarly activity, such as presentations, publications and/or grants.
