General Summary
Responsible for medical screening, phlebotomy (whole blood and apheresis), and care of donors within our service area in accordance with the standard operating procedure (SOP) and BBG/STB&T policies.
Responsible for performing and monitoring apheresis collection procedures, and special collections including autologous and therapeutic blood draws.
Will perform medical assessment, phlebotomy, and care of donors/patients and ensure cellular therapy products are safely and properly collected while maintaining all aspects of protocol compliance.
Responsible for accurately completing data collection forms and maintaining charts.

Essential Tasks
Ensure collections in the apheresis center are performed in accordance with regulatory requirements to include IRBs, FDA, NMDP and organization policies and procedures.
Monitor donors and patients on a continuous basis.
Observe apheresis center collections closely to collect the desired product.
Demonstrate excellent customer service and communication with donors and patients.
Actively recruit donors’ friends and family members to join the registry.
Display professional conduct with internal and external customers.
Explain collection process and pre/post donation instructions to donors and patients.
Collect blood samples from donors and patients and submit to laboratories for testing. Review medical records and lab test results and follow through with proper actions.
Perform quality reviews of collection charts for accuracy and compliance with protocols and regulatory standards. Work with department staff and external agencies to schedule donor and patient appointments.
This may require working nights and/or weekends as needed to ensure flexibility for donors and patients.
Serve as contact for donor and patient medical needs and initiate the necessary documentation for reporting adverse events and/or protocol deviations.
Consult Medical Director, as needed, for questions regarding clinical research trials, donor/patient care and referrals to clinics or specialists.
Perform set up and take down of apheresis center equipment.
Maintain and organize donor/patient records, document data; complete forms and submit as required.
Access software and network website as necessary, to review protocols, protocol revisions and complete and submit data collection forms.
Ensure adequate stock of all collection materials and supplies.
Follow up with donors in compliance with NMDP procedures, as needed.
Accurately label products and shipments for transport to include blood product packing according to the defined manufacturing plans.
Perform quality control of apheresis equipment to include daily, monthly, semi-annual, and annual maintenance.
Maintain donor and patient confidentiality.
Train new collection staff collection processes in the apheresis center.
Assist other department personnel with the completion of tasks.
Maintain a close working relationship with department management and staff.
Display a professional image and positive demeanor that contributes to the success of the organization.
Maintain regulatory compliance by successfully completing training and competency assignments on time.
Perform the quality control function (including documentation).
Determine donor eligibility through comprehensive donor verification, medical history interview and medical screening procedures (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, Hgb/Hct via finger stick).
Obtain donor consent prior to donation.
Perform whole blood phlebotomy and automated collection (apheresis) procedures.
Assess, treat and report adverse donor reactions (including documentation).
Perform record review and data entry.
Ensure all necessary records and blood products are legible, labeled accurately and complete. Performs other duties as assigned.
Non-Essential Tasks
Provide assistance to other departments as needed. Access software programs as necessary to complete tasks.
Education
Requires a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma.
Prefer sixty (60) hours from an accredited college or university or Associate Degree from an accredited college or university.
The preferred major is Nursing or related field.
Licenses and/or Certifications
Texas Operators Driver’s License
Phlebotomy certification preferred
Experience
Requires three or more years phlebotomy experience.
Prefer two years peripheral IV insertion experience.
Prefer two or more years of apheresis collection experience in dialysis, plasma, platelets and/or blood center.
Prefer Bilingual (Spanish/English).
Knowledge
Must acquire a working knowledge of donor processing criteria.
Must have a working knowledge and understanding of FDA regulations and current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs).
Must maintain knowledge of and perform according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and policies.
Must be capable of evaluating medical history and lab test results to determine proper action.
Must acquire a working knowledge of medical terminology and geography.
