BioMADE is working to change the United States’ innovation stance for bioindustrial products by creating a network of pilot and intermediate scale facilities so that U. S. innovators can scale, and ultimately produce, bioindustrial products domestically. This position will be responsible for supporting this once-in-a-generation opportunity to create biomanufacturing infrastructure, enabled by President Biden’s Executive Order 14081 (https://tinyurl.com/yyjv7t5j) and focused through the Depart of Defense’s Manufacturing Innovation Institutes (https://tinyurl.com/nn7zpzfw), will set our nation on course to have resilient and secure supply chains for the chemicals and materials originating from renewable feedstocks.
The Senior Capital Project Engineer (SCPE) will be part of a team that develops the engineering plan, engineering design, and construction for up to a dozen pilot facilities to support the scale up of product and processes in bioindustrial manufacturing. Based on biochemical engineering principles, the SCPE will collaborate to identify needs and convert them into robust unit operations and facilities’ designs supporting domestic scale up and innovation. This position may be involved in development of the long-term capital investment strategies for the pilot plant network, or on projects seeking operational efficiencies, capacity expansion, and continuous improvement. The SCPE will contribute by bringing real world experience to the design, construction, commissioning, and start-up of these piloting facilities. They will work in conjunction with BioMADE’s extensive set of member organizations, world-class engineering and design consultants, and pilot facility technical team to improving these assets and enable domestic companies to successfully scale and begin production of their innovative products.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Define, design, and deliver pilot and intermediate scale facilities as part of national network of 12 to 15 facilities.
- Partner with our membership and consultants to identify needs and convert them into robust unit operations and facilities designs supporting domestic scale up to production level facilities.
- Author or review front end loading documents, engineering drawings, equipment datasheets, piping, and instrumentation diagram (P&IDs), and other technical documentations for utility systems and process equipment, including automation and control systems.
- Contribute to equipment specification and selection, bid packages, procurement, installation, and start-up.
- Work with vendors, manage engineering and project schedules, and budgets.
- Author or review Standard Operating Procedures and Process Safety Reviews.
- Ensure knowledge transfer as appropriate.
- Other duties as assigned.
