This position is part of the Upstream Process Development group in the Bioprocess Research and Development (BR&D) organization within Lilly Research Labs. BR&D delivers new medicines to patients through the development and commercialization of insulins, peptides, oligonucleotides, monoclonal antibodies, novel therapeutic proteins, and gene therapy systems.
The Advisor - Upstream Process Development is responsible for the development and optimization of technologies and processes to produce recombinant therapeutic proteins and genetic medicines, as well as for process control strategy development, process scale-up, and technology transfer to pilot plant and manufacturing sites.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is
$121,500 - $198,000
Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance). Responsibilities
- Lead the design, execution, and interpretation of upstream experiments for processes leading to the generation of drug substance (therapeutic proteins or genetic medicines).
- Participate in and/or lead cross-functional process development teams and effectively collaborate with other groups in Bioprocess and Bioproduct Development, Discovery, TS&MS and Manufacturing.
- Support the process scale-up and tech transfer of upstream processes to manufacturing sites.
- Use mathematical methods, computer tools, and fundamental scientific and engineering principles applied to experimental designs, process development, and process understanding.
- Leading/supporting organizational strategic initiatives, evaluating and/or installing new capabilities/technologies, and leveraging internal and external influence to solve problems, improve platform productivities, and benchmark potential solutions.
- Work effectively with external parties on development projects, research collaborations and outsourcing efforts.
- Authorship of technical reports and regulatory documents.
- Lead/support implementation of organizational strategic initiatives in support of the Lily pipeline.
- Keep abreast of relevant scientific literature/new technologies/capabilities and regulatory initiatives/requirements. Lead implementation, as appropriate.
- Ensure work and team activities are aligned with all relevant Development Quality, regulatory, HSE, GLP requirements.
- Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Bioengineering, Biotechnology, Biochemistry or related field with 0-3 years of experience.
- Alternatively, skills commensurate with a PhD scientist with Upstream Process Development experience.
- General knowledge of cell culture and fermentation with an emphasis on production of recombinant proteins and genetic medicines.
- Problem solving and decision-making.
- Demonstration of scientific and people leadership skills.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Must be able to work productively in an interdisciplinary team environment.
- General knowledge and understanding of issues associated with scaling of upstream processes, and use of statistics for data analysis.
- Hands-on experiences with mammalian bioprocess (CHO or HEK293) and with scale-down models (bench scale bioreactors).
- Experience with intensified fed-batch and/or perfusion process.
- Familiarity with process/media development for recombinant protein production, genetic medicines, or other relevant therapeutic cell culture derived modalities.
