Summary/Objective
The Lead Painter is a working leadership position and is responsible for overseeing and coordinating painting projects, ensuring the timely and high-quality completion of tasks, and is actively involved in the day-to-day tasks and operations of the team. This role involves demonstrating advanced painting skills while providing leadership to a team of painters.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
Demonstrates understanding and full performance ability in each of the following:
- Plan and organize painting projects, taking into consideration the scope of work, materials needed, and project timelines.
- Coordinate with the Facility Manager and other team members to ensure efficient workflow and adherence to project specifications.
- Provide leadership and guidance to a team of painters, including task assignment, training, and performance management.
- Foster a positive and collaborative work environment, promoting teamwork and a commitment to quality workmanship.
- Encourage skill development, and a commitment to quality craftsmanship.
- Manage and track inventory of painting supplies, ensuring an adequate stock is maintained.
- Conduct inspections to ensure the quality and craftsmanship of completed work.
- Collaborate with the Facility Manager and/or Human Resources to implement required corrective measures.
- Enforce safety protocols and ensure that all team members adhere to safety regulations.
- Collaborate with Facility Manager to communicate project updates.
- Demonstrates a working knowledge of all tools of the trade for commercial painting.
- Exceptional ability to accomplish the full range of paining techniques and procedures for performing job duties and preventive maintenance on structures and equipment within the facility including application, removal, and replacement of interior wall covering, paint, etc.
- Ability to prepare surfaces of equipment, interior and exterior walls and railing by using sandpaper, scrapers, and sanding machines.
- Proficient in painting window frames and makes minor repairs to windows.
- Performs preventative, diagnostic and corrective painting maintenance of facilities through a computer maintenance management system (CMMS)
- Cleaning equipment, storage rooms, and tool rooms.
- Demonstrates ability to work as a team and address issues and complaints as a part of the group decision-making process.

Work Environment
This position may have a moderate to extensive stress level associated with dealing with crowds of public visitors. Must be able to work under pressure for extended periods of time. The environment is mainly indoors, however position may be required to work outdoors and exposed to the elements (heat, rain, etc.). The work involves moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g. working around moving parts, heights, machines, fumes, irritant chemicals. May be required to use protective clothing, or gear such as masks, googles, gloves, hard hats, or shields.
Physical Demands
Position requires lifting, climbing, carrying, bending, stooping, squatting, and kneeling for extended periods of time. Extensive walking and or standing. Ability to lift up to 50-pound items with or without assistance, while maintaining good balance. Must be flexible enough to reach above shoulder level and be able to push and pull for extended periods of time. The ability to work for extended periods of time from ladders and high scaffolding required.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position; hours of work must be flexible and varied to meet the demands of the events of the facility. Must be able to work extended and/or irregular hours including day, nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
Required Education and Experience
- Minimum of seven (7) years’ experience as a commercial painter or a similar position preferred.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. Trade or technical school training in related discipline preferred.
- Valid State of Alabama Driver License.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
- Knowledgeable of the practices, methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in commercial painting.
- Knowledgeable of painting techniques, paints, varnishes, stains, enamels, solvents, and other materials used.
- Knowledgeable of methods of preparing surfaces for painting or other finishing.
- Knowledge in the standard practices of hanging types of wall covering.
- Must be able to read and interpret drawings, specifications, operational manuals, and equipment service manuals.
- Ability to interpret and work from sketches, rough layouts, standard drawings and specifications required.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards of building trades and of necessary safety precautions.
- Ability to understand oral and written instructions in English.
- Ability to demonstrate critical thinking, time management, decision making/problem solving skills.
- Anticipates problems and takes action to prevent or correct repairs.
- Ability to be supervised/unsupervised and work cooperatively with co-workers and provide good internal and external customer service.
- Ability to use and care for general maintenance tools and equipment.
- Basic computer skills preferred.
