Position Description & Details
Bismarck State College is seeking an Academic Advisor to join our team and play a vital role in supporting our students' academic success. This position involves working closely with current and prospective students to provide guidance on program requirements, course registration procedures, and transfer opportunities.
- Academic Advising: Assist current and prospective students in understanding program requirements, course selection, and academic procedures. Provide guidance on degree progress and offer support to students on academic warning, probation, and reapplication after suspension.
- Student Outreach: Collaborate with other campus departments to engage in outreach activities aimed at supporting student registration, retention, and graduation.
- Registration Support: Prepare for and lead advising roles at student registration events for new, current, and transfer students. This includes reviewing transcripts, advising students, and facilitating group registration events.
- Student Services: Address student inquiries, questions, and conflicts via phone calls and walk-ins. Assist students with the graduation application process and provide information regarding transfer and employment opportunities after graduation.
- Degree Planning: Assist students placed on financial aid disqualification, receiving education benefits from the US Department of Veterans Affairs, and those receiving services from Job Service and Workforce Safety and Insurance with degree plans.
- Retention Strategies: Implement retention strategies and advising services to support student success. Identify and connect students with appropriate support services and notify them of important academic milestones.
- Data Analysis: Review and analyze data related to student enrollment, retention, academic progress, transfer, and graduation rates. Contribute to the development and implementation of intervention strategies.
- Materials Maintenance: Coordinate, maintain, and disseminate advising materials, including advising worksheets and transfer materials. Ensure students are informed about registration dates and deadlines.
- Liaison Role: Act as a liaison between campus departments and outside institutions. Work closely with faculty and staff to communicate advising policies and procedures. Attend meetings related to advising and transfer issues.
- Miscellaneous Duties: Support innovation and process improvement within the department and the college as a whole. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in education, business, counseling, or a related field, along with two years of related experience.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Good computer software skills - Microsoft Office, email, electronic calendars, and good keyboarding skills.
- Sensitivity to cultural diversity and an understanding of minority-related educational issues.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of individuals and strong customer relation skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in education, business, counseling, or related field.
- Experience in a similar position in higher education.
