The Project Management Co-op Student assists the Bison Project Management team in various project management activities over a six-month period. The position is designed to provide hands-on experience in project management within a railway engineering context while contributing meaningfully to the team's success.
Essential Duties
- Assist in preparing and maintaining project documentation, including project plans, schedules, and reports.
- Assist in tracking job costs monthly as well as cost to complete each project monthly.
- Update project logs and records.
- Schedule and coordinate project meetings; prepare meeting agendas and take minutes.
- Draft and send communications to stakeholders and help manage stakeholder expectations and feedback.
- Collect and analyze project data to track progress and performance.
- Prepare data visualization reports for project reviews.
- Assist in identifying project risks, developing mitigation plans; monitor and report on risk status.
- Help in tracking resource allocation and utilization and managing project budgets and expenses.
- Assist with requesting quotes and with the purchasing of materials and equipment.
- Support quality assurance activities, including inspections and audits.
- Document and report on quality issues including nonconformance reports and corrective action plans.
- Coordinate with different departments to ensure project tasks are completed on time and assist in resolving project-related issues and conflicts.
- Use project management software tools to update project status and track deliverables and provide support in training team members on project management tools.
- Identify uses of AI in project management and develop a strategy plan for implementation.
- Create standard operating procedures for tasks performed by each coop student.
- Participate in process improvement initiatives and suggest and implement improvements to project management processes.
- Ensure project activities comply with safety regulations and standards.
- Assist in conducting safety audits and inspections.
Required Education and Experience
- Currently enrolled in a Project Management program at Northeastern University.
- Experience with project management software tools or completed coursework involving project management software tools.
Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
- Valid Driver's License.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to communicate effectively and intelligently in person, via telephone, and in writing.
- Ability to deal effectively with others and establish working relationships among team members.
- Ability to identify requirements and allocate and effectively use information, time and resources to satisfy objectives and priorities.
- Ability to thoroughly and accurately complete complex work, focusing on all critical areas.
- Ability to manage time and multiple priorities to meet deadlines.
- Familiarity with data analysis and visualization techniques.
- Basic understanding of risk management principles.
- Demonstrate responsibility, accountability and commitment to established vision, mission and goals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous internship or co-op experience in project management or a related field.
- Familiarity with railway engineering concepts.
- Strong presentation skills.
- Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau or Power BI.
- Understanding of AI applications in project management.
Physical Requirements
- Remaining in a stationary position, standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
- Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
- Repetitive motions with wrists, hands and/or fingers.
- Light work involving moving objects up to 20 pounds.
- Communicating with others to exchange information.
- Occasional moving from one worksite to another.
Additional Requirements
Employee must:
- Pass a background check.
- Pass a drug test i.e. a negative result.
