Black Hills State University invites applications for the position of Provost / Vice President for Academic Affairs with an anticipated start of June 2025. Nestled in the beautiful Black Hills of Spearfish, South Dakota, BHSU seeks a transformational leader who is passionate about the mission of the university and is committed to fostering academic excellence, innovation, and student success.
Position Overview :
The provost is responsible for overseeing the academic mission and strategic direction of the institution. This key leadership position requires an individual with a strong vision for the future of higher education, proven leadership skills, and a commitment to advancing the universitys academic priorities. The provost will work closely with Associate Provost, faculty, staff, students, alumni, community members, and administrators to ensure the academic quality and integrity of all programs and initiatives.
Reporting to the President, the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs is responsible for all matters pertaining to academic affairs, provides campus-wide leadership in achieving the goals and objectives of the university, and serves on the Presidents Administrative Team. The provost makes recommendations concerning the faculty (including hiring, retention, tenure, and promotion), and is responsible for leadership of BHSUs four colleges Behavioral and Natural Sciences, Business, Education, and Liberal Arts.
Academic Affairs includes Graduate Programs, the Center for American Indian Studies, the Center for Civic Engagement, the Center for Faculty Innovation, the Center for the Advancement of Math and Science Education, the Opportunity Center, the E.Y Berry Library, Instructional Design, Sponsored Programs, Institutional Research, Institutional Assessment, Online and Continuing Education, the Student Success Center, International Programs, and the Honors Program. The provost is responsible for the curriculum and academic integrity of all academic programs, serves as the Chief Academic Officer for the Higher Learning Commission, and is responsible for regional and programmatic accreditation.
Key Responsibilities :
- Lead the academic affairs division and collaborate with academic deans, department heads, and faculty to ensure the institution's academic programs and initiatives are of the highest caliber.
- Oversee curriculum development, program evaluation, faculty recruitment, and academic planning to support institutional goals.
- Coordinate effective collaboration among the four colleges, community members, multiple campus settings, operational units of BHSU.
- Develop key partnerships with local and regional stakeholders (e.g. : business / industry partnerships, school districts, regional universities, community colleges, and the Board of Regents.)
- Work collaboratively with other senior administrators to advance the universitys strategic priorities, including recruitment, marketing, enrollment, and retention.
- Advocate for faculty development and support a culture of continuous improvement and innovation in teaching, learning, and research.
