Salary: $30-$35/ hr

The Traveling Field Mechanic position includes performing all forms of mechanical repairs and metal fabrication work on Dredge America’s Project Sites. The duties of a Traveling Field Mechanic include inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, fabricating, rebuilding, and maintaining both light and heavy-duty equipment related to the dredging industry. 

Primary Role: 

A Traveling Field Mechanics role will be primarily focused on repairing equipment in the field. Below is a list of the primary duties that will be covered under this role. 

  • Perform highly skilled and complex mechanical repairs on both light and heavy equipment such as trucks, loaders, cranes, travel lift, telehandlers, both diesel/gas engines, slurry/water pumps, and all dredge related parts. 
  • Perform the duties of a mechanic involved in hands-on repairs and maintenance in the field. 
  • Train field personnel on equipment repair and inspection procedures. 
  • Inspect equipment, analyze, troubleshoot, and plan sequence of repair operations. 
  • Perform proper preventative maintenance schedules on equipment and document onsite spare parts inventories. 
  • Perform project and equipment inspections when visiting any project site. 
  • Rotate between project sites to maximize equipment run time. 
  • Work directly with the Field Operations Manager to schedule and coordinate equipment repairs and maintenance. 
  • Coordinate with Shop Operations Manager for ordering parts and equipment. 
  • Ability to engage in heavy manual labor for extended periods, in all types of weather, and under various working conditions. 
  • Adjust, or repair and replace, parts in engines, transmissions, differentials, and other equipment. 
  • Train new employees in all phases of work including the operation of equipment, use of tools, and methods or procedures of work. 
  • Adjust or repair hydraulic systems and components. 
  • Maintain and instruct others on proper safety procedures. 
  • Respond to repair requests. 
  • Record daily work. 
  • Perform, participate, and document daily safety meetings. 
  • Perform repairs on jobsites as required. 
  • Investigate complaints and equipment malfunctions. 
  • Coordinate parts runs; maintain sufficient parts inventory on job sites. 
  • Analyze performance of equipment. 
  • Recommend improved work methods and procedures, assist in training employees. 
  • Fabricate and create new equipment for upcoming projects. 
  • Repair existing dredge equipment, hulls, boats, barges, and motors. 
  • Assist Shop Operations Manager with preventative maintenance program. 
  • Assist Shop Operations Manager with spare parts inventory program. 
Daily tasks for this role will vary between fabrication and equipment repairs based on the current needs and upcoming projects. Flexibility and adaptability will be key to succeeding in this position. 

This individual will spend 95% of their time in the field and 5% of their time in the shop.   

They will work 3 week on 1 week off rotation schedule. 

  • Schedule and hours will vary weekly depending on needs. 
  • Typical work week will be between 60 and 80 hours. 
  • 100% traveling position. 
  • Will work in the shop or on a rental project if field work is limited. 
  • Expect to answer phone calls or emergencies during rotation week 
Education: 

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working on and repairing light and heavy equipment
  • HS Diploma or Equivalent
  • Technical Training or Graduation from a Technical School is a plus 
Skills: 

  • Proficient in trouble shooting and diagnosing problems with heavy equipment.
  • Experience and knowledge in the methods, materials, and tools needed to repair both light and heavy-duty equipment (Includes diesel and gasoline engines).
  • Experience with fabricating equipment, tanks, hulls, and other custom equipment for project specific needs.
  • Experience working with mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical component systems.
  • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of working on and around heavy equipment.
  • Prefer experience working with hydraulics and hydraulic systems.
  • Skilled in electrical wiring and wiring controls is a plus.
  • Skilled in the operation of a variety of tools and equipment used in repairing equipment.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate repair records and reports.
  • Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to analyze and repair mechanical failures.
  • Ability to work effectively and establish good working relationships with others.
  • Ability to work effectively with the general public.
  • Clear driving record. 
Other: 

  • Physically must be able to work in the field and lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Travel is required.
  • Work special hours as required.
