About Us

Blue Ocean Mariculture was founded in 2009 to pursue the sustainable farming of local Hawaiian marine finfish. We are proud to be the only open ocean mariculture farm in the United States. With first-hand experience in commercial capture fisheries and understand that some farming of the oceans is necessary and inevitable.


We are the exclusive producer of Seriola rivoliana, better known by the market name Hawaiian Kanpachi, a premium sashimi-grade fish coveted by chefs at top sushi and fine dining restaurants everywhere. Hawaiian Kanpachi is raised in the clear, clean waters off Kona, Hawaii, using the most environmentally sustainable aquaculture farming methods.


About the Role

The Lead Facilities Technician (LFT) supports Processing operations under the supervision of the Processing Manager by safely and successfully maintaining and repairing Processing facilities, equipment, and vehicles. The LFT is responsible for the general Processing facility ground’s cleanliness and organization. LFT’s are professional, organized, self-motivated, possess strong communication skills, and lead by example.  It is the LFT’s responsibility to ensure that all operating tasks are completed in a manner consistent with company policies, procedures, and Processing Manager expectations.

 

Duties, Responsibilities, & Requisites

Production & Projects

  • Lead installation and operation of monitoring and control systems, filtration, pumping, processing machinery, plumbing and other electro-mechanical equipment.
  • Inspect equipment regularly for malfunctions, including visual inspections, listening for irregular noises, and conducting scheduled testing as appropriate. Diagnosing and repairing equipment as needed.
  • Maintain a practical understanding of departmental operations and ensure open communication with the Processing Manager and the Director of Processing.
  • Provide input to the Processing Manager for plans and schedules. Assist in coordinating daily/weekly staffing, tasks, and priorities.
  • Develop, maintain, and follow a schedule for inspecting, servicing, and testing vehicles, machinery, and equipment.
  • Oversee and maintain optimal inventory levels for tools, spare parts, and related items ensuring proper purchasing protocol is followed.
  • Understand department KPI’s and how operations and equipment functionality contribute to the success for the department and identify where improvements can be made to impact these KPI’s positively.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment in the workshop and around critical machinery areas.
  • Conduct or coordinate outsourced fabrication needs for Processing to include but not limited to fabrication of containment, cooling systems, warehousing systems, temperature monitoring systems and a variety of other specialized systems.
  • Participate in the on-call response team occasionally requiring working non-standard hours on short notice.
  • Manage the maintenance and upkeep of all onsite vehicles including refrigerated vans and forklifts.

Team

  • Maintain and comply with Company policies and procedures, including safety and biosecurity protocols.
  • Assist with developing and maintaining a high performing team, conduct training, and assistance with conflict resolution.  Develop SOPs as needed.
  • Promote a culture of safety, integrity, cohesion, and excellence.
  • Perform any duties assigned by the Processing Manager necessary to operate the department and maintain a safe working environment. 

What You'll Bring

  • Three years or more of relevant experience is preferred.
  • Capable of leading small teams to achieve project-specific goals.
  • Strong working knowledge of water pumping systems, electro-mechanical equipment, monitoring and control systems, as well as a variety of vehicle types.
  • Strong working knowledge of standard construction and maintenance tools including hand tools, shop tools and fish processing-specialized tools.
  • Be self-motivated and independent worker with strong organizational skills and attention to detail, including ability to multi-task and manage paperwork.
  • Strong computer skills, including all MS Office applications.
  • Have strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Understand and comply with workplace safety standards.
  • Hold a valid driver’s license and have a clear drivers abstract.
  • Able to work atypical schedule, including Saturdays, Sundays & holidays
  • Be able to consistently lift 50 lbs., frequently climb 4 feet, & work in a variety of environments, including sunny, hot, humid and cold (down to 33°F) environments.
