What are the responsibilities and job description for the Hospitality Instructional Specialist - Tech Center (PT) position at Blue Ridge Community and Technical College?
This is a grant-funded position.
We are seeking a dedicated Hospitality Instructional Specialist to oversee and guide the daily instructional assistance in the Culinary Academy’s student-run retail lab, the Bruin. This position focuses on mentoring students in delivering exceptional customer service while managing the lab's real-world hospitality environment through instruction. The Instructional Specialist will provide hands-on training, foster skill development, and ensure that students demonstrate skills related to daily retail operations.
This grant-funded, part-time position is housed at the Tech Center, but may report to other locations in order to meet the needs of the position.
- Demonstrate appropriate culinary skills
- Supervise and support students in delivering professional customer service.
- Support daily instruction in the student-run retail lab.
- Provide practical instruction and feedback to enhance students’ hospitality skills.
- Maintain a positive and professional customer experience in the retail setting.
- Regular work requires a great deal of standing, lifting, bending and stretching.
- Must be able to stand for a minimum of 6 hours.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. required.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse populations in a team environment
- Willingness to work some weekends and evenings as needed
- Assess student learning by partnering with Chef lead through varying methods (i.e. quizzes, tests, papers, group work or presentations).
- Incorporate a variety of teaching methods in class to all levels of student capacity.
- Provide academic and professional guidance for students.
- Prompt response to all student and Blue Ridge CTC e-mails (within 48 hours of receipt).
- Meet with students, as needed
- Submit weekly attendance and meet deadlines for grades submitted on-line to Chef lead
- Participate in any Culinary Program meetings
Education
- Associate’s degree in culinary arts, food service, or related field desired
Experience
- One year of industry-related experience required
- Previous higher education teaching experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
- Ability to operate a cash drawer with mathematical skills
- Excellent verbal and written English skills.
- Valid Driver’s License
