Bluegrass Equine Surgery Center (BESC) is an equine veterinary practice providing exceptional client service and primary medical care in the central Kentucky region. We are building a new, diverse, supportive, and driven team.
BESC is seeking to immediately fill the position of Surgeon's Vet Tech
Hours: Full time, Monday-Friday, 9a.m. - 5p.m.
Reports to: Assigned doctor, Lead In-House Surgical Tech, and Practice Manager
Department: Surgery
Location: Hospital and field
Compensation: Salaried, based on experience, includes benefits
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Surgeon's Vet Tech is responsible for multiple procedures and duties daily.
General
- Model professionalism and ethical practices
- Use EZVet software for farm call billing
- Communicate with Practice Manager, clients, other doctors and in-house staff for scheduling and other purposes
Medical
- Perform surgical set up, sterile prep according to doctor preference
- Properly begin standard procedures according to doctor's preference
- Prepare all instruments for the select surgery
- Clip and sterile scrub the patient
- Assist veterinarian in surgery as needed
- Initiate standard procedures for surgery patients
- Perform recovery duties for one patient while preparing for the next surgery
- Gather advanced Physical exam and medical history
- Monitor mucous membrane color
- Take heart and lung sounds
- Take GI sounds in quadrants
- Take digital pulses
- Assist with regional limb perfusions, joint injections, mass removals, castrations, wound debriding, belly taps, joint Lavages/arthrocentesis
- Set up a catheter and administer fluids
- Bandage horse feet and legs; foot, leg, stack, sweat wraps
- Restrain patients as needed
- Take vital measurements on patients
- Take blood for laboratory procedures
- Scrub, clean, rinse, and bandage wounds
- Properly gather medical histories
- Monitor hospitalized and surgery patients
- Set up catheters and administer fluids
- Take x-rays
Other
- Promote cooperative working environment among staff members; understand the value of teamwork; show enthusiasm and willingness to perform as necessary to help the practice function as a unit
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

- Work exposure to all aspects of an equine business enterprise
- Demonstrated, advanced understanding of equine veterinary practices
- Ability to read horse body language and perform advanced handling
