Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Equine Veterinary Technician/Assistant to join our team. In this role, you will play a crucial part in providing high-quality care while supporting our veterinary staff. Our practice is entirely ambulatory with veterinarians traveling from farm to farm each day. The ideal candidate will have a strong passion for the thoroughbred industry and possess the skills necessary to assist in various veterinary procedures.
Duties
- Assist veterinarians during examinations and procedures by preparing animals and equipment.
- Perform blood draws and basic medication administration.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the veterinarians' practice vehicles as well as the office.
- Assist veterinarians in all aspects of the horse industry, including but not limited to: breeding, foaling, training and sales.
- Technicians/assistants will have the opportunity to work in ambulatory, laboratory, pharmacy, and office settings.
- Help with X-ray procedures by positioning animals, holding the X-ray plate and managing equipment.
- Communicate with the office, clients and other veterinarians.
- Assist the veterinarians in scheduling and procedure planning.
- Technicians/assistants will be given opportunities to travel to out-of-state horse sales.
Skills
- Experience working with horses.
- Experience with X-ray and ultrasound equipment is a plus but not mandatory; training will be provided.
- Background as a veterinary technician or equivalent experience is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with equine, specifically Thoroughbred, breeding procedures.
- Understanding of veterinary critical care practices for handling emergencies.
- Computer skills such as using Microsoft office programs.
- Capable of lifting 40 pounds.
- Be able to walk and stand for extended periods of time.
- Posses the ability to work semi-outdoors in all weather conditions.
