What are the responsibilities and job description for the OSP Engineer position at BlueSky Resource Solutions?
We are a rapidly growing provider of high-speed fiber optic infrastructure, delivering innovative solutions to a diverse customer base. As part of our expansion, we are seeking an experienced Fiber Planner and Estimator to join our team. This role will play a key part in the planning, design, and cost estimation of fiber optic network projects, utilizing cutting-edge technology to ensure efficient, scalable, and cost-effective infrastructure development.
In this role, you will work closely with cross-functional teams to map, analyze, and plan network routes using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Your expertise will be crucial in delivering fiber network designs on time and within budget, while contributing to the continued growth and success of our projects.
Fiber Network Planning:
- Develop and design fiber optic network layouts and infrastructure based on project specifications.
- Utilize GIS tools to analyze and map existing infrastructure, identifying opportunities for fiber deployment.
- Conduct field surveys and collaborate with local authorities to understand zoning, right-of-way, and permitting requirements.
- Plan fiber routes with consideration for environmental factors, access points, and future scalability.
Cost Estimation:
- Prepare accurate and detailed cost estimates for fiber optic projects, covering labor, materials, and equipment.
- Estimate material quantities based on GIS data and network design requirements.
- Work closely with project managers and engineers to ensure estimates align with project scope and budget.
GIS Mapping & Analysis:
- Use GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar) to create and maintain fiber network maps and route plans.
- Analyze GIS data to identify cost-effective fiber routes, considering geographic and regulatory constraints.
- Provide GIS-based insights and recommendations for network optimization.
Project Coordination:
- Collaborate with engineers, field crews, and project managers to ensure the successful execution of fiber network projects.
- Support project teams by providing updated network designs and revisions.
- Manage updates to fiber maps, ensuring all changes are accurately reflected in GIS databases.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain clear and organized documentation of all fiber network designs, cost estimates, and GIS data.
- Prepare regular reports on project progress, budget status, and any adjustments to estimates.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Geography, GIS, or a related field (preferred).
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in fiber planning, estimating, or a related role, with a focus on GIS technology.
- Proven experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, Arc Online) for mapping and network planning.
- Familiarity with fiber optic design standards and industry best practices.
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret geographic data and translate it into network designs.
- Proficiency in GIS software and spatial analysis tools.
- Solid understanding of fiber optic network architecture, including aerial, underground, and hybrid deployments.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in cost estimation and project planning.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Certifications (Preferred):
- GIS Certification (GISP or ESRI certifications).
- Fiber optic design or project management cert
